Muheim involved as Switzerland make World Cup history – now Messi awaits
The HSV defender and his Switzerland teammates kept their nerve in the shootout to see off Colombia in the last 16. Reigning world champions Argentina are up next.
Switzerland and HSV’s Miro Muheim are into the quarter-finals of a World Cup for the first time since 1954. The Swiss held their nerve against Colombia, winning the penalty shootout 4-3, with Muheim coming on in the 71st minute after missing the previous three matches because of calf problems. The teams were locked at 0-0 after extra time.
The HSV man is now fully fit again and slotted in at left-back after his introduction. He found a teammate with 82% of his passes and also won half of his duels. He was shown a yellow card in extra time. “Our clear aim is to reach the quarter-finals. We have the quality to do that,” Muheim said before the start of the tournament – and he has been proven right. Switzerland will now face reigning world champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, in the quarter-finals. The match kicks off at 03:00 CEST in the early hours of Sunday.
