New HSV shirt numbers: Torunarigha pays tribute to Jordan
Several HSV players will wear new shirt numbers in the 2026/27 season, with Jordan Torunarigha taking inspiration from Michael Jordan and Kofi Amoako making a personal gesture.
A new season always brings change, and that also applies to the numbers on the back of the players’ shirts. It had already been confirmed that Albert Grønbæk will wear number 11 following his permanent move, switching from 23. The shirt had belonged to Ransford Königsdörffer for the past four seasons and became available after his departure. Grønbæk has worn the number before, during his time at CFC Genoa.
Grønbæk’s former number 23 has now been taken by Jordan Torunarigha, in a nod to basketball legend Michael Jordan, who the HSV defender was named after. “Michael Jordan is one of my idols. My father was a big fan of his. It’s an honour for me to carry that name on my back. It gives me even more confidence. I want to embody the same mentality as Michael Jordan, giving everything and leading by example,” said Torunarigha. The defender previously wore number 23 at KAA Gent in Belgium, where he also had his first name on the back of his shirt rather than his surname Torunarigha. That will now be the case again at HSV. Torunarigha’s previous number 25 is currently vacant.
New signing Kofi Amoako has chosen number 22. His first choice would have been number 6, but that already belongs to Albert Sambi Lokonga. However, Amoako had a special reason for choosing his alternative. Lars Bünning, his former teammate at SG Dynamo Dresden, recently suffered a brain haemorrhage. “He comes from near Hamburg, he’s a HSV fan, and when I saw that he once wore number 22 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, I knew I had to take it,” explained Amoako.
Fellow new signing Mads Bröcker, who is set to be slowly integrated into the first team via the U21s, will wear number 47.
