Nicolai Remberg: “I want to pass on my experience”
After the first few sessions in Helsingør, the HSV defensive midfielder discussed the start of pre-season, his role within the squad and new signing Kofi Amoako.
Nicolai Remberg was all smiles after scoring the winner in the final training game, although the 26-year-old was quick to play it down. A goal in training was all well and good, he said, but he would much rather score one in a competitive match. That has so far eluded him during his time at Hamburger SV, although his role as a ball-winner comes with other responsibilities and last season was a positive one for him in many respects. Remberg now wants to build on that and continue making progress, as he told reporters after training on Thursday (10th July).
Remberg spoke in detail about...
…the summer break: I used the break to switch off and recharge. It’s not as though I trained flat out the entire time, even if everyone might think I did. (laughs) I found a good balance. I don’t like going into pre-season feeling unprepared, so I completed my programme and came back fit.
…the start of training: It’s great to be back. You obviously look forward to having a break after such an intense season, but after a few weeks you’re ready to get going again. We’ve had a great few days here. The conditions are outstanding, as are the hotel and the training pitch, and everyone has been very friendly.
…new signing Kofi Amoako: Kofi and I are similar types of player. He’s a great guy and you can see that straight away. I’m sure he can learn a thing or two from me because I already have two Bundesliga seasons under my belt. But it’ll take some doing to get past ‘Rambo’. (laughs)
…his role within the squad: I became an important member of the team last year. That probably comes down to my performances and the way I go about things. I’m very happy to be at HSV and to have played so many games last season. I think I did my job well. I always want to improve as a footballer, and I managed to do that last year. I’ve now gained another year of experience and want to pass that on. I want to set an example for the others and take on even more responsibility.
…the young players in the training-camp squad: There are a lot of youngsters here, which I think is great because they’re always hungry to improve. If I’d had the chance to train with the first team at a club like HSV when I was 17, it would have been a huge honour. Everyone has approached it with a really positive attitude, and that’s the most important thing at the start of pre-season.
…Ransford Königsdörffer: I got on really well with Ransi. The first time I walked into the dressing room and his space was empty, it felt strange. Everyone has to follow their own path. I hope things go well for him at Mainz and I’m already looking forward to seeing him again. We spoke on the phone and talked about our first home game against Mainz. I’m sure we’ll swap shirts. I told him I’m going to beat him. That’s what I always say to former teammates. (smiles) When we play against each other, we’re not friends. We can be friends again afterwards.
