Nicolai Remberg named new HSV captain
The 26-year-old midfielder has been appointed captain of the Rothosen, with Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nicolas Capaldo named as his vice-captains. Yussuf Poulsen will support the trio.
Nicolai Remberg will lead the Rothosen during the 2026/27 season, taking over the armband from teammate Yussuf Poulsen. Head coach Merlin Polzin informed the squad of his decision on Saturday (1st August), ahead of the friendly against Everton (kick-off: 17:00 CEST).
Remberg is the 33rd player to captain HSV since the Bundesliga was founded in 1963. He had already worn the armband in two matches last season. Sambi Lokonga and Capaldo have been appointed as vice-captains, while Poulsen will support the trio. The latter will continue to play a leading role within the squad and pass on his experience even without the armband.
“Being named HSV captain is incredibly special for me. My career has never been about a rapid rise, but I have kept moving forward because I have always worked on myself, and that is something I will continue to set an example of as captain. I want to lead the way both on and off the pitch and always demand that our team give 100 per cent. At the same time, the team can expect Sambi, Capi and me to give them our full support and trust, with Yussi alongside us,” said Remberg.
“Rambo sets incredibly high standards for himself and tries to push his limits every single day. That drive to perform and his attitude are exactly what we want HSV to stand for as we look to take the next step together. Alongside Rambo, who leads by example with his performances, we have Sambi, who brings control and direction, and Capi, who is a real driving force. Both set high standards and have a direct impact on the rest of the group. Yussi will also help the trio and the entire team with his wealth of international experience,” explained Polzin.
Following the friendly against Everton, the Rothosen will travel to the adidas Home Ground for their training camp on Monday (3rd August). Their next friendly will then take place against LOSC at the Volksparkstadion at 15:00 CEST on Saturday (8th August).
