Nicolas Capaldo makes Argentina debut
The Hamburger SV vice-captain made his first senior international appearance in a pre-World Cup friendly against Honduras.
The 27-year-old came on in the 82nd minute of the Albiceleste’s World Cup warm-up against Honduras, who have not qualified for the tournament. Argentina won 2-0 thanks to goals from Lautaro Martínez (37’, penalty) and Giuliano Simeone (54’).
Capaldo received his first senior call-up after making 27 competitive appearances, scoring once and providing three assists, in his first season at HSV. He had previously only represented his country at U23 level, making nine appearances and scoring twice. Capaldo could feature for Argentina again in the early morning hours on Wednesday (CEST), when the Albiceleste play their final pre-tournament friendly against Iceland.
Lionel Scaloni’s side will then open their group stage campaign at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA – but without Capaldo. The versatile right-footer is one of several players who have been included in Argentina’s squad for their World Cup preparations but are not part of the final 26-man squad for the tournament itself. Regardless of that, Capaldo’s senior international debut marks another milestone in his career.
