"On some days, the ball just doesn’t want to go in"
Despite 25 shots at goal in comparison to their opponents’ five, HSV fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to VfL Wolfsburg. A missed penalty, strikes that found only the post and bar and a host of further chances all went begging. Read on for all the match reaction.
Yussuf Poulsen: Our efficiency was the only negative today. We played well for 90 minutes but Wolfsburg produced a moment of individual quality through Daghim to pick out the corner. That happens sometimes, but otherwise we defended effectively and had many, many chances. On some days in football, the ball just doesn’t want to go in. We simply got really unlucky. Despite the two losses, we need to keep doing what we’re doing because we were consistently the better side over the past fixtures.
Miro Muheim: Defeats are always tough to take. We were the better side for large parts today, dominating the game and creating many chances. It’s frustrating that we did not score and therefore come away empty-handed. Even if we had played on for longer today, the ball would probably still have not found its way into the goal, but I nevertheless have to pay the team the compliment that we never gave up and kept going until the final whistle. We can feel disappointed today but then have to switch focus to the DFB Pokal from tomorrow.
"It is just simply unbelievable that we lost this game" Nicolai Remberg
Nicolai Remberg: It is simply unbelievable that we lost this game. Just as we did last week in Leipzig, we performed really well. The fans provided us with the support to match and sooner or later that is going to be reflected by us picking up points. I am therefore not concerned, because our process is in full flow and we are ever improving. As a result, we could have earned more today but just need to get the ball in the goal. The final score is obviously tough to take.
Ransford Königsdörffer: We gave a good showing once again but unfortunately just not scored the goals needed. I had the best chance to do that from the penalty spot. I picked up the ball because I had a good feeling and wanted to take on the responsibility, but that’s how things go in football sometimes. I am obviously frustrated that I was unable to help out the team. There will also be games, though, in which the ball does go over the line and we do get rewarded for our performance.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: This game was easy to sum up: We played precisely the sort of football we want to but just without scoring. Nevertheless, the way in which our matches are going is right. With the chances we are creating, the goals and points will come. It’s tricky to be proud of your performance when you lose, but the way we went about things was good. We are on the right track.
"Unfortunately, we did not manage to reward ourselves" Merlin Polzin
Merlin Polzin: Football is characterised by the fact that the better team does not always win come the end of things. Results can be completely independent from the statistics and performances. That was obviously extremely tough for us to take today. Already last week in Leipzig, I saw a very good showing both on and off the ball and this week was a notch up from that. We gave hardly anything away apart from the goal we conceded and another good chance, while also managing to consistently create goalscoring chances. We did not do that a week ago, but we applied great pressure today. Unfortunately, we were unable to break through the compact Wolfsburg back line and goalkeeper and reward ourselves. That is very frustrating. Despite that, I am very confident with regard to how we proceed from here.
Paul Simonis: It was a really important game for us. We delivered two very poor performances over the past games and did not show much energy. We wanted to bring this energy out on the pitch today and that’s what I saw. HSV played very well and had the better of the statistics. I am proud of the team, even if the better side did not win today.
