“Our mentality today was incredible”
Hamburger SV fully embraced the expected battle against Union Berlin and were rewarded with a 3-2 home win and three important points – we gathered the post-match reaction from the Volksparkstadion.
Nicolas Capaldo: It always feels good to score your first goal for a new team. But what matters far more is that we got the home win today – it’s a fantastic result for the whole team. We knew we’d be up against a very combative side who play a lot of long balls and have physically strong forwards. In the end, we had to suffer a bit, but we managed to turn the game around. Everyone’s delighted for Ransi. We’ve never doubted him and we know what quality he’s got. It makes it even nicer that he was able to show that and reward himself with goals.
Robert Glatzel: I was absolutely delighted to be back in the starting XI. In the end, the time out injured was a little longer than expected. This home win made it the perfect day. I knew what was coming against Union Berlin today – it was a bit like Championship football, which really reminded me of my time in England. As a team, we executed our game and the match plan superbly, threw ourselves into every long ball and defended with everything we had. Ransi has developed really well and was our matchwinner today. I’m really pleased for him personally. These certainly haven’t been easy weeks for him, and then it’s somehow typical for a striker: he scored last week and now today he’s helped the team again with his goals.
“You need that kind of momentum to win the game”
Nicolai Remberg: It’s an important three points and they’re deserved too – and it means we’ve now moved above Union Berlin. It was a great fight from both teams. The moment for our goal to go 2-1 up is classic football: Jordan puts off Ilic just enough at the very last second, so he puts it wide, and then shortly afterwards we score at the other end. You need that kind of momentum to win a game. In the end, we fought with every man – everyone threw themselves into it in stoppage time after they got back to within a goal. You simply have to get yourself over the line in a game like that because it was the kind of battle we expected. I’m hugely proud of the team.
Luka Vuskovic: We won a lot of our duels and picked up plenty of second balls. Our mentality today was just incredible. We went behind, then pushed ourselves even more and fought our way back into the game. In the end, the three points are the deserved reward.
“It says a lot about us how we dealt with that situation”
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: It’s a deserved win for us because we were the better team. We played good football in the first half and then went behind, but it says a lot about us how we dealt with that situation and came back. We kept playing with courage. We were up against an intense opponent and our performance was right. I’m happy with the way we won the game today.
Merlin Polzin: We started well, but Union Berlin posed us big challenges and we felt that. After we conceded, you could see what this team stands for. Our equaliser is a really well-worked goal. After that, we really should have gone behind, but we’re able to turn the game around instead. At 3-1, we felt a little too safe, and then you notice just how high Union’s quality is as a team and individually. That’s why it got more tense towards the end than we would have liked. We wanted to make this game something special on the occasion of our 1,887th Bundesliga match and win it. In the end, it was another home victory, and I’m very pleased about that.
Steffen Baumgart: It was a game that played into HSV’s hands because of our mistakes. We go 1-0 up and then concede from two transition situations. We had more than one chance to make it 2-2, but then we fall 3-1 behind. We kept at it and tried everything to turn the game around, but we scored too late to give ourselves a real chance. In the end, based on how the match went, we left the pitch as deserved losers
