"We missed the chance to turn this moment to our advantage"
Hamburger SV lost 2-0 to FC St. Pauli in the 112th Hamburg derby. As a result, the Rothosen were disappointed and unhappy with how the game went after the final whistle. Read the post-match reaction here.
Yussuf Poulsen: We were missing the final piece of the puzzle today. It was a close game, and close games are always decided by the little things. We just weren’t the better team today. We need to learn to be more dangerous. We’re playing good football in phases and look good in the final third, but then we’re missing the decisive pass or cross. We’ve got to keep working on that. There were a lot of positives today, though, but of course the result is the main thing.
Ransford Königsdörffer: We gave it our all from the beginning and knew that we wouldn’t be able to keep it up for 90 minutes. Still, we kept putting our stamp on the game and continued to set our sights high during the break. Then, at the start of the second half, we scored the goal, but it was the same case as last week – offside again. I tried to stay onside and initially I was relatively sure that I was. At the end of the day, we were missing a little bit of punchiness and also the luck we needed in a few moments.
Nicolai Remberg: We started the game well, looked determined and played some good football. Then, we conceded a silly goal from a set piece. That took the wind out of our sails after a good period of play. It was extremely difficult after the red card, since we were very open at the back. That’s why we ultimately deserved to lose. Still, we didn’t do too badly – I’m fully convinced of that. We’re lacking something, but that’s the case with a lot of teams. We’re still on the right track.
"The goal took the momentum out of our game"
Merlin Polzin: We’re really disappointed that we couldn’t win today. We started really well. You could feel the energy from the team and the stadium straight away. We made our presence felt in challenges and created threats. The goal took some of the momentum out of our game. From the 35th minute onwards, we struggled to stick to out plan. We addressed this clearly during the interval. The start to the second half and the disallowed goal showed how we can – and want to – create threats. Unfortunately, we missed the chance to turn this moment to our advantage. Moments like that are decisive in derbies. With the 2-0 and, at the very least, the red card, it became really tough. Today, we unfortunately didn’t manage to get the win in the derby. At the same time, we’ve seen signs that our style of play on and off the ball can work in the Bundesliga. We’re in the middle of a process and that will remain the case. There are a lot of things that are making me feel confident for the future.
Alexander Blessin: We’re proud and happy that we managed to win a tough game. We deserved it. At the beginning, we had problems with our organisation. Over time, we found our feet in terms of positioning. It was the same in the first ten minutes of the second half. Then, the balance of the game tipped again. We were a little lucky that he was offside by three or four centimetres. Otherwise, we controlled the game well, the movement was always good, and we created chances. Perhaps we could’ve scored another couple of goals, but on the whole we’re happy with the victory.
