Rothosen loan Agyekum out to Viktoria Köln
The 20-year-old centre-back has joined the 3. Liga side from Cologne on a temporary deal.
There’s been another loan outgoing for HSV on deadline day, with home-grown defender Joel Agyekum joining third-tier team FC Viktoria Köln on loan. All parties agreed to the deal on Monday, 1st September. “Joel has improved a lot over the past few months and is a fixture of our Bundesliga squad. The recent injury has not undermined that for us. In order to continue on this path, he needs regular playing time at the highest possible level – that’s why this loan makes a lot of sense for everyone involved,” explained director of football Claus Costa. “What I’ve had to experience in my past few months here at HSV is still hard to grasp. With a view to the new season, I’m now looking forward to a new challenge at Viktoria Köln in the 3. Liga, where I want to take my next step on a personal level,” noted the defender, who was named in the matchday squad against SSV Ulm last season and got to experience the promotion celebrations up close and personal.
From HSV’s academy to youth international
Agyekum, who became the 520th player to don a HSV jersey since the start of the Bundesliga in February’s away game against Preußen Münster and signed his first professional contract in April, has been at the club since 2017. During this period, the 20-year-old has played for the Rothosen at every age level and sometimes captained the youth side. The defender staked his claim for international recognition with these experiences and has played for Germany’s U18 side. This season, the Hamburg-born talent has played three times for Hamburg’s U21s in the Regionalliga Nord. Now, he will be featuring in the 3. Liga.
