The Rothosen have signed the 27-year-old centre-back on loan from Premier League side Leeds United. Claus Costa: “Sebastiaan fits our profile perfectly.”
Defensive boost for HSV: The Rothosen have signed centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw. The 27-year-old defender transfers to the Hanseatic city on loan from English Premier League club Leeds United for the 2026/27 campaign. The Belgian signed his contract on Tuesday (18 August) and will wear the jersey number 33 – his favourite number.
“Sebastiaan is already familiar with the Bundesliga from his previous clubs and brings a remarkable work ethic with him. He is someone who displays discipline and professionalism every day, while also embodying team spirit, strength of character and good communication skills. With his personality, he is a great asset to any dressing room and therefore perfectly fits into our team structure. He is set to take on a leading role within the team and help his teammates improve even further through his coaching expertise. We are confident that he will settle in quickly with us, and we extend a very warm welcome to Sebastiaan,” says Kathleen Krüger, Board Member for Sport.
Sporting Director Claus Costa adds: “Sebastiaan fits our requirements profile perfectly. He brings the physical presence, strength in duels and quality in the air that we are looking for in our defence. He also stands out for his mature and consistent style of play. Sebastiaan is a strong leader who takes responsibility both on and off the pitch and is capable of organising a defence. We are delighted that Sebastiaan has chosen our path. We are convinced that his quality and experience will see him play an important role, and we are looking forward to starting the new Bundesliga campaign together with him.”

Third Bundesliga spell and reunion with Sambi Lokonga
Bornauw joined Leeds United last year, making twelve Premier League appearances and five appearances in cup competitions. Before that, he played for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga from 2021 to 2025 and for 1. FC Köln from 2019 to 2021. HSV is now his third club in Germany’s top flight, where he has already made a total of 140 appearances so far. Among the current Rothosen squad, only Yussuf Poulsen has made more Bundesliga appearances (248).
Bornauw came through the youth academy of Belgian record champions RSC Anderlecht, joining the club at the age of ten and making his professional debut at 19. One of his team-mates during his youth was Albert Sambi Lokonga, with whom Bornauw played from a young age – first at club level and later for various Belgian youth sides. The pair were even named in the senior national team squad together twice, with Bornauw going on to make four appearances for Belgium.
“I was convinced from the very first moment during the talks with HSV because I felt the trust of those in charge. I am really delighted to be here. I like the emotions surrounding a club that rich in tradition like HSV. As a player, that gives me a lot of energy. The fans can look forward to me always giving everything for my team,” says Bornauw, who will become the tenth Belgian in HSV history to play for the Rothosen. Welcome to HSV, Sebastiaan!
