Sebastian Dirscherl extends at HSV
Hamburger SV can today announce that our head of scouting has extended his contract at the club. Sporting director Claus Costa said: “Seba possesses a wealth of expertise and provides us with an incredible understanding of the market.”
HSV have made a statement of intent in the sporting department by extending the contract of the club’s head of scouting Sebastian Dirscherl. The 39-year-old joined HSV in the summer of 2018, taking up his current position in April 2023 and playing a key role in the squad planning at Hamburger SV.
“We’re thrilled to announce that this role will continue to be assumed by somebody who operates at such a high level already,” said HSV board member Eric Huwer. “Along with his colleagues in the scouting department, Seba has made a decisive contribution to our sporting development. He and his team have also themselves constantly evolved over their time here. We all want to continue on this journey together.”
Sporting Director Claus Costa, who preceded Dirscherl as head of scouting (August 2019 to April 2023), also heaped praise on his work and approach to the role: “Seba possesses a wealth of expertise and provides us with an incredible understanding of the market. In his position, he is responsible for overseeing our live, video and data scouting operations, and also has fantastic instincts when it comes to finding the right personalities to bring in. His meticulousness and creativity have been the foundation of countless transfers that we’ve made. This past summer, our scouting department played a crucial role in preparing our squad for the challenges of life in the Bundesliga in such a short space of time. As well as Seba’s know-how and work ethic, I’m also incredibly appreciative of the trust in our working relationship and his mindset as a team player.”

Dirscherl himself is feeling grateful and motivated as he looks ahead to the work to come: “I’m so pleased to be signing this contract extension and appreciate the trust placed in me as a result. HSV is a special club with a clear sporting vision, and I’m proud and grateful to be able to continue with the team on this journey. My collaboration with Claus, Eric and the coaching staff is characterised by a distinct professionalism, openness and trust as well as a shared determination to strengthen HSV in a sustainable way. Looking to the future, I’ll continue to give my all as we work to identify players who represent a good fit for HSV, both as athletes and as people. Our mission is to continue to develop the scouting department, streamline our processes and become more competitive as a team.”
Sebastian Dirscherl was born on 17th May 1986 in Oberviechtach, Bavaria, near the border with Czechia, and moved to Karlsruhe with his family at a young age. Following the completion of a degree in sports science, he made his first steps in the world of professional football through internships at Karlsruher SC and TSG Hoffenheim. After gaining his DFB Elite Youth License, he began a career in coaching. He attained a bachelor’s and a master’s from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2016, and following several years of freelance work as a scout and match analyst for Karlsruher SC, he was given a permanent position in the same role at the beginning of 2017. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, the now 39-year-old moved to Hamburger SV. At the Rothosen, Dirscherl also worked as a scout for several years, initially covering southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria and parts of France. On 1st April 2023, he then took over the role of head of scouting. Since then, Dirscherl has grown alongside with the department, continuously developing it further and looking to the future with great drive and determination.
