Ten Rothosen away on international duty
With the club season over, almost a dozen HSV players are now away with their national teams. Three are heading to the World Cup, one has earned his first senior call-up and two have already been in action.
Around two weeks after Hamburger SV’s season came to an end at club level, ten HSV players are away on international duty. A special highlight awaits a trio of Rothosen, with Miro Muheim (Switzerland), Sander Tangvik (Norway) and Luka Vuskovic (Croatia) all heading to the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Their teams will play warm-up fixtures before the tournament begins.
Muheim and Switzerland first face Australia (6th June), followed by Qatar (13th June). Tangvik and Norway take on Sweden (1st June) and Morocco (7th June). The 23-year-old goalkeeper, who made his HSV debut on the final Bundesliga matchday in Leverkusen and saved a penalty in the 1-1 draw, is still awaiting his first senior international appearance. Vuskovic and Croatia are in action against Belgium on 2nd June, before facing Slovenia five days later.
Nicolas Capaldo was named in Argentina’s provisional World Cup squad, but was not included in the final 26-man group. The HSV vice-captain will nevertheless be involved in the upcoming warm-up matches against Honduras (7th June) and Iceland (10th June). It is Capaldo’s first senior call-up, having previously made nine appearances for his country’s U23s.
In addition to those four players, Albert Grönbaek is set to feature for Denmark against DR Congo (3rd June) and Ukraine (7th June), while Warmed Omari will be in action for Comoros against Rwanda (6th June) and Equatorial Guinea (9th June). Both have been called up by their national teams for the first time since September 2025. Fabio Balde, meanwhile, will take part in the prestigious Maurice Revello Tournament in France (31st May to 13th June) with Portugal’s U20s. The Seleção will face Japan (3rd June), Ivory Coast (6th June), Venezuela (8th June) and Canada (11th June) in the group stage. Damion Downs will play two friendlies with the United States U21s against Ukraine (5th June) and Uzbekistan (8th June).
Philip Otele (Nigeria) and Otto Stange (Germany U19) have already been in action for their national teams. Nigeria are taking part in the Unity Cup in London and beat Zimbabwe 2-0 last Tuesday (26th May). Otele made his first start for the Super Eagles and was substituted after 77 minutes. Nigeria face Jamaica today, Saturday (30th May). Stange, meanwhile, enjoyed a successful final warm-up with the Germany U19s ahead of the European U19 Championship. The DFB youngsters beat Slovakia 3-2, with Stange scoring from the spot in the 70th minute to make it 2-2. The striker had come on in the 62nd minute alongside HSV academy player Moritz Reimers, who will join Holstein Kiel for the new season. Germany’s U19s will take part in the EUROs in Wales from 28th June.
