“That was absolutely spine-tingling!”
HSV snatched a point late on against Borussia Dortmund thanks to Königsdörffer’s stoppage-time header, sending the Volksparkstadion into raptures. Here’s all the reaction to the 1-1 draw and a last-minute equaliser that felt like far more than just a point.
Miro Muheim: We threw ourselves into everything defensively. We had to do a lot of work at the back, stayed tight in the gaps and didn’t let Dortmund play in dangerous areas. Scoring at the end and keeping a point here was deserved. We knew it would take teamwork, the right mentality and a real desire to defend. We showed that, so we can be happy today. It was important for us to finally get a result to show for our performances.
Nicolai Remberg: We’ve had phases of pressure like we had at the end today in recent matches too, but we didn’t reward ourselves then. That’s why this point feels so good. It was fully deserved. Sometimes you have to force the luck and fight for it – and that’s exactly what we did. Ransi’s goal was absolutely spine-tingling. I actually told him before the game: “You’ll come on and score.” Then in stoppage time the ball comes in and he heads it home – just a brilliant story, and the kind football writes. We were so compact today and made it really hard for them to play. We headed, tackled and battled everything away – that was impressive, and I’ve rarely seen it from a team like that.
“We forced the equaliser together with the fans” Jean-Luc Dompe
Yussuf Poulsen: It’s not the first time we’ve looked dangerous late in a game. We have so much power and energy. Our defending and physical presence today were excellent. We barely allowed anything against a top side, and that has to be the standard in the coming weeks. Their goal can happen – it came a bit out of nowhere. Otherwise we had our chances and in the end we earned the reward. A deserved point. Ransi has done really well in recent weeks. Today he came on from a different role and sometimes that helps. A fantastic finish. I’m absolutely delighted for him – he’s a great guy and we get on really well.
Jean-Luc Dompé: It was a tough match because they have so much quality. But we fought until the very end, played with more belief in the second half and, together with the fans, forced the equaliser we deserved. Everyone is happy to take that point today. We’ve played well recently without scoring, so we’re even happier for Ransi. He’s worked hard every day and got his reward.
“Football writes its own stories, and today it wrote one with Ransi’s goal” Merlin Polzin
Merlin Polzin: We said beforehand how much we were looking forward to this match. That was a huge motivation to bring big energy – and the lads did exactly that. Until the goal, you could see the quality Dortmund have. They made it extremely difficult for us and gave us few opportunities to counter. But we had our moments too and at half time we spoke about being braver against their press. In the second half – especially after going behind – the lads tried to do that more and more. They pushed Dortmund back and created moments in the box. Football writes its own stories, and today it wrote one with Ransi’s goal. A really successful afternoon for us with a result we’re very happy about.
Niko Kovac: We controlled and dominated the game up until making it 1-0, and cut out HSV’s counter-attacks. After the goal, though, we didn’t play the same way. We didn’t keep the ball well enough to get into dangerous areas, and we defended deeper and deeper, allowing HSV to take the initiative. Conceding in the last second is frustrating, but football goes like that sometimes. We experienced the opposite a few days ago against Köln. Life goes on – now our focus is on the next game
