Full focus ahead, no looking back
Hamburger SV want to continue their strong start to the year as they travel to face Jahn Regensburg on Sunday afternoon (13:30 CET). The players are not thinking about the previous fixture between the two sides this season.
HSV have only ever conceded five goals at home on two occasions since the Bundesliga started in 1963. The first was a 1974 match against FC Bayern München, the second was the previous meeting this season with SSV Jahn Regensburg. Five months on from this disappointing defeat, where the Bavarian side pressed well, were dangerous on the counter attack and exploited mistakes made by the home side, HSV have learned from the mistakes made in this match. The Rothosen have only lost twice since this defeat. The 2. Bundesliga leaders have also changed coaches since the 5-0 defeat to Regensburg and Hannes Wolf will certainly not be put off by the previous meeting between the two sides.
New options in the HSV squad
The 37-year-old HSV head coach explained during his pre-match press conference on Friday that the match in September has not influenced his side’s plans ahead of the trip to Regensburg. “It's clear that the game earlier on in the season was tough. Things didn’t exactly go to plan on the pitch However, the boys need no extra motivation to win, especially when you look at the current table standings. They always want to win. We don’t need to look at the previous result for extra inspiration.” Currently top of the table, HSV have built a six point cushion over St Pauli in fourth place. However, the main aim has to be to build on the current form. Last weekend’s 2-2 draw in Heidenheim was an example of how difficult it can be to grind out victories in the second tier.
HSV welcome back established full backs Douglas Santos and Gotoku Sakai back into the squad ahead of the trip to Regensburg. The Brazilian missed the draw in Heidenheim with a thigh problem while the Japanese defender missed HSV’s last two matches through suspension after picking up a straight red card in the 2-0 defeat in Bielefeld. Both players are ready to return to action and Hee-chan Hwang, who suffered a minor tear in his hip flexor, provides stiff competition for the duo on each wing. HSV will look to secure their first away win of 2019 on Sunday and Hannes Wolf admitted that his side will have to give a top performance to return with all three points. “(Jahn Regensburg coach) Achim Beierlorzer spent a lot of time at RB Leipzig and you can see this in the way Regensburg like to attack with pace and work head. They want you to feel uncomfortable on the pitch and you have to combat this.” The 51-year-old Regensburg coach and Wolf have spent time together before, completing a coaching badge together in 2009.

Regensburg suffering problems in front of goal
Hannes Wolf believes that vital points are up for grabs on Sunday afternoon. Jahn Regensburg have not been able to replicate the strong performances they showed before the winter break and have only secured four points from their opening four matches of 2019. After opening the year with an impressive 2-0 win against SC Paderborn, Regenburg lost twice in succession away against Holstein Kiel (2-0) and Arminia Bielefeld (3-0). After a goalless draw against Dynamo Dresden, Sunday’s hosts have failed to score in 287 minutes of action.
Despite the uninspiring start to the year, Regensburg have already secured 30 points so far this season and are eighth in the 2. Bundesliga table. The Rothosen know they cannot underestimate their opposition on Sunday and need to continue going in the right direction. “Our overall start to 2019 probably rests on this performance in Regensburg. If we win, we will have secured ten points from our opening five matches and progressed to the next round of the DFB-Pokal. If we don’t win, we will still have the chance to secure an instant return to the Bundesliga at the end of the season, but the task will be harder and our performances haven’t been good enough.” HSV enter tomorrow’s match fully focused on the task at hand.
