"The disappointment is huge"
Despite controlling the game and playing the last 30 minutes against ten men, Hamburger SV were unable to claim all three points against Mainz on matchday 25. The players and coaches were obviously very disappointed come the final whistle.
Two strikes of the woodwork, an offside goal and a missed penalty. In a game that was so utterly important in the fight against relegation there was no shortage of effort from the Rothosen, but they were unable to claim all three points against Mainz. The game acted as a microcosm of the entire season to date for HSV. The mood was clear for all to see in the mixed zone following the final whistle as well. “The disappointment is huge. I gave my all and did everything I could, but it wasn’t enough today,” said Sven Schipplock.
Sven Schipplock: I am someone who does not give up until it is just not possible to give any more. But I am also wise enough to know that we needed to win this game today to give ourselves a chance in the race to stay up for the rest of the season. The disappointment at the moment is huge. I gave my all and did everything I could, but it wasn’t enough today.” The ball just did not want to cross the line today, even though we tried everything. We did everything right except score.”
Bernd Hollerbach: I think we gave it our all today. All the players were well aware of just how important the match was for us. The stats show it too – we had 20 shots to their five and 11 corners compared to just one for Mainz. I’m incredibly sorry to the team and the fans that we weren’t rewarded for our efforts today. Despite having so many chances, we just couldn’t find the back of the net, so we have to make do with the point. For sure, it’s very disappointing and everyone is feeling downbeat about it. There are nine games left now and it’s in my nature to never give up. However, everyone knows that it’ll be very difficult now.
