"The only negative is the result"
HSV delivered an impressive performance away to RB Leipzig on Bundesliga matchday seven but were ultimately unfortunate to fall to a narrow 2-1 defeat. Read on for all the match reaction.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: Leipzig constantly tried to press us high, but we always found a way to play through the press. That was positive, as was our defensive showing. At the end of the day, the little moments were what decided the game. We did well to keep them away from our goal on the whole and we had the feeling throughout the 90 minutes that we could get something from the contest. A goal could easily have arrived during the closing stages, but it just wasn’t to be. Nevertheless, the fact we held our own against a high-quality side is really good – the only negative is the result.
Immanuel Pherai: We gave a good account of ourselves, forcing the opposition back and putting them under pressure. That final pass was just lacking. As a result, the game turned out really annoyingly for us and simply felt unjust.
"We showed that we belong in the Bundesliga" Yussuf Poulsen
Miro Muheim: Leipzig are aiming to qualify for the Champions League and we were able to force such a team back today. That is positive and serves as an example for our development, so we can be wholly satisfied with the game, in actuality. However, the result is what matters when all is said and done and that just didn’t go our way unfortunately. Leipzig showed great efficiency which we didn’t quite; therefore, that poses as something to work on, but we are on the right track.
Yussuf Poulsen: Today was really special for me. The way the Leipzig fans welcomed me back and gave me such a great belated send-off was extraordinary. That meant a lot to me. Despite that, we came here to win and gave a good showing. I feel that we were the better team for large parts of the game. Not many promoted teams will have been able to manage that and we showed without a doubt that we belong in the Bundesliga.
"We don’t want to just play well – we want to pick up points, too" Merlin Polzin
Merlin Polzin: Congratulations to Ole Werner and his team. I’ve got mixed feelings today since we have not achieved our target, but you also have to consider the way the game went. It was clear to see today that we have made the next step in our development. All in all, a lot of things went right and we showed that we can compete in this league against any opposition if we give it our all. We know that we will represent the underdogs in a lot of games this season and we know what we have at our disposal. However, we don’t want to just play well – we want to pick up points, too.
Ole Werner: I am very satisfied with the result and believe that we were simply the more clinical team in a balanced up until we made it 2-1. We became too passive from that point onwards and couldn’t manage to relieve the pressure we were under. We were a long way from doing that. Nevertheless, we defended well during the nervy stages at the end, even if we do want to be a bit more active in possession.
