“The only thing missing today was the goals”
Hamburger SV drew 0-0 with Borussia Mönchengladbach in their first home game of 2026. Here is the post-match reaction.
Miro Muheim: We simply should have gone into half time with a lead. To come away with just one point in the end is disappointing. At the same time, we played well and controlled the game. The only thing missing today was the goals. We can also take a lot of positives from the game. We were extremely aggressive and played with real intensity, while we also got stuck in and played some nice football in the final third. Our coaching team set us up really well, especially in terms of our pressing. They gave us everything we needed to win the game, but we unfortunately weren’t able to get all three points today.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: For the first 70 minutes we dictated the game and showed what we’re about. They only really got into the game in the final 20 minutes. Throughout the match, I always had the feeling that we were trying to score. We did well to not let the missed chances affect us. Our performance was good enough but the result doesn’t reflect that. It’s frustrating that we weren’t able to turn our display into more points.
Nicolai Remberg: A point is fine on paper, but given how the game played out, it feels like we left two points out there. We have to be honest with ourselves and say we should have scored. We were in control and should have won the game. It’s frustrating that we didn’t take our chances, although their goalkeeper also had a very good game. We can definitely be proud of the first half, that was a very strong performance.

Damion Downs: We completely pinned them back in the first 45 minutes. The only thing missing was the goal. You could see the quality we have in the squad, especially in the way we combined with one another at times. The performance and the atmosphere were both good, but we unfortunately didn’t get the result we were hoping for. Sometimes you just need a bit of luck. Still, it meant a lot to me to play at the Volksparkstadion for the first time.
Merlin Polzin: The performance we delivered today was impressive, especially when you consider how the season started. After seven years in the second division, we’ve always talked about this being a process in which we continue to grow and develop. The first half, in particular, was very strong – we dominated possession and showed real intensity and control without the ball. We also knew we were facing a team that have put in some really good performances in recent months, so from a coaching perspective there was a lot to be satisfied with. At the same time, performances alone aren’t enough – results matter too, and today we didn’t get the one we wanted. We would have loved to take two more points. The players gave everything, but in the end it wasn’t quite enough. What’s important for us is knowing what we’re capable of when we push ourselves to the limit. That belief is key. And after all those years in the second division, we’ll never feel bad about picking up a point in the Bundesliga.
Eugen Polanski: We’re very happy with the point. Firstly, because we know how difficult it is to get anything here, and secondly because we had very little time to prepare after a heavy defeat. We saw two very different halves. Hamburg played with great intensity in the first half, and we had to survive a few dangerous situations. What we were missing was intent, especially in possession. In the second half, we gradually improved, managed to bring more control into our game and, from around the 60th minute onwards, played in a composed way. The substitutions helped us tweak our structure, and I’d like to highlight that.
