“This kind of team performance is needed if we are to get three points”
HSV celebrated their first win of the season as they defeated 1. FC Heidenheim 2-1 at a sold-out Volksparkstadion. Read all the match reaction here.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: At this level, this kind of team performance is needed if we are to get the three points. We’re delighted that we were able to work well as a team today. Of course, we had chances to seal the deal earlier on, but perhaps that’s how it had to go today for us to win. There were many moments today that exemplified what we want to stand for, namely remaining compact defensively and determined going forward. The stadium was full of energy from the off and we really wanted to embrace that in our game. Wins like this naturally provide us with confidence.
"The support from the fans was fantastic today" Fabio Vieira
Rayan Philippe: It was a crazy game in a crazy atmosphere. It is unbelievable to be able to score a goal in front of this crowd and then celebrate a win on top of that. That is what you play football for. We obviously now want to build on this performance.
Fabio Vieira: We are very pleased with the win and wanted to get that winning feeling to boost confidence both throughout the team and the club. The support from the fans was fantastic today and it’s great that we were able to give them three points to celebrate. I’m giving it my all in order to help the team achieve our goals. The most important thing is that we continue to work hard as a collective to carry on improving. The same goes for every club on the planet - there’s no such thing as a perfect team. However, today is a day on which we can enjoy the victory before we start thinking about the next game.
Luka Vuskovic: I am very emotional and proud – proud of us, our victory and also of my goal. It means a lot to me to have scored in my very first home game, especially as my brother, who is always there for me, has his own story with HSV. The feeling after scoring, among all the celebrating fans, was just incredible. At first, I was afraid that the goal might be disallowed for some reason, but that made me all the happier, both for the goal, but above all about for the win.
"There was so much energy on show today, both from the team and in the stands" Merlin Polzin
Miro Muheim: This win was extremely important and it has brought so much happiness. The crazy atmosphere inside the stadium did us the world of good – the fans really drove us on. The goal we conceded to make it 2-1 at the end was annoying, but the main thing is that we won. Of course, there was pressure, as there always is when you play for Hamburg, but we didn’t let that get to us. We had prepared in detail and delivered a strong performance in many areas of the game.
Merlin Polzin: We had to work for this win, not only during today’s 90 minutes but over the course of the past week. The team were very critical of themselves and held good discussions. We spoke clearly about the style of football that we stand for. With that in mind, the lads showed great energy and intensity at the right times, which they have been working on doing day-by-day. I am really pleased that we have secured all three points against an opponent that made life very tricky for us. There was so much energy on show today, both from the team and in the stands.
Frank Schmidt: Today’s defeat is hard for us to take. We had good chances to go ahead in the first 25 minutes and only first gave away an opportunity halfway through the opening period. The free kick that led to the goal wasn’t particularly well taken, but HSV pressed on and scored. We almost scored immediately afterwards but missed the chance to make it 1-1. The second half continued in similar fashion and we had several more chances. So it wasn’t down to the number or quality of chances today. We simply didn’t make enough of the ones we did get. Their second goal is also highly annoying because we didn’t defend it at all well. 2-0 was then especially hard to come back from. Nevertheless, I have to compliment my team for never giving up and deservedly reducing the arrears.
