Training resumes ahead of impending DFB Cup opener

A day after HSV’s 1-1 friendly draw with Espanyol Barcelona at the Volksparkstadion on Sunday, all thoughts and focus turned to the DFB Cup round 1 trip to Osnabrück. Good news: Luca Waldschmidt resumed first team training.

It was a popular season-opening event, attended by around 25,000 fans. Around 20,000 of them watched the Rothosen draw 1-1 with Spanish top flight side Espanyol Barcelona.

The next day head coach Markus Gisdol held two training sessions, the first of which began at 10.00 AM. The players were split into three groups, with one group jogging through the nearby Volkspark, another working hard on exercise bikes while the third trained with the ball on the pitch. The second session held in the afternoon took place at the indoor gym.

Full focus on DFB Cup tie

Training for Sunday’s DFB Cup round 1 trip to Osnabrück next Sunday (13.08, kick off 3.30 PM) begins in earnest on Tuesday. Those ruled out by injury include Filip Kostic (knee), Bjarne Thoelke (also knee) and Albin Ekdal. The Swedish international sustained bruising to his back and will be out of action for several days. Gisdol explained: “It is a bitter loss because Albin was in great shape.”

Apart from the list of walking wounded (including Pierre-Michel Lasogga who is out with a hardened thigh muscle) there was at least some good news for Rothosen fans with the news that Luca Waldschmidt is back in training following a serious ankle injury. The 21 year old striker took full part in the morning session without any problems.
