Vuskovic makes World Cup debut as Croatia fall to England
Croatia suffered defeat in their first group-stage game of this year’s World Cup, with the HSV loanee playing 66 minutes for the side.
The Croatia national team, featuring HSV loanee Luka Vuskovic, suffered a 4-2 defeat to England in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. Harry Kane gave England the lead in the 12th minute before Martin Baturina responded for Croatia to make it 1-1 (36’). Kane restored England’s advantage shortly before the break (42'), but Petar Musa equalised deep into added time (45+5'). After the restart, goals from Jude Bellingham (47') and Marcus Rashford (85') secured victory for England.
Vuskovic started the match and played 66 minutes before being substituted off. On his World Cup debut, the 19-year-old centre-back completed 37 of his 42 passes (88 per cent), made five clearances and won possession back on six occasions.
Ahead of the tournament, the HSV loanee had spoken of his excitement at competing in his first World Cup. “It means a lot to me that I have the opportunity to play alongside so many great players and against other great players,” he said. His personal aim, he added, was “to play in every match”.
Following their opening defeat, Croatia will continue their Group L campaign against Panama on 24th June and Ghana on 27th June.
