“We controlled the game but didn’t reward ourselves”
A hotly contested Hamburg derby between FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV ended in a goalless draw. Read the match reaction here.
Nicolai Remberg: We clearly controlled the game, especially in the first half, but just didn’t reward ourselves once again, like against Gladbach last time out. We get forward well but then just lack the final pass as well as the decision making and clinical nature in front of goal. One of the balls just needs to squeeze over the line for us to rediscover our rhythm in attack. After our first-half display, a point is not quite enough for us but 0-0 is probably a fair result at the end of the day. It’s another point on the board and another clean sheet.
Luka Vuskovic: To get a point away from home here is okay. Nonetheless, we are disappointed, since we played well for large parts and therefore might have deserved all three points. We had our chances but just missed that finishing touch – my header was an example of that. We accept this point and will now prepare as best we can for our next fixture with Bayern München.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: In my eyes, we were the better side. We were solid, in control of things, and created a couple of chances. Unfortunately, we just weren’t clinical enough in the final third. Ultimately, a point is not enough because we wanted to get the win. The overall performance was a positive one, regardless, even if we need to be more effective in the future.
Merlin Polzin: We started well, controlling the game, dominating possession. Repeatedly, we looked to play into the right areas and the fact it wasn’t easy to do so was not due to the temperature or our incapability but rather as a result of St. Pauli’s effective defensive strategy. I felt that we were primarily where we needed to be to win tackles and following turnovers throughout the first half, but we have needed to be more clinical on the counter, especially in games like today’s. That really frustrates me. The game was more open in the second half, and we take the point even if we are not satisfied with the result. It was a solid performance for our process and one which we can build on.
Alexander Blessin: On the whole, we did not produce enough and that disappoints me. Our display just really didn’t spark that fire in me, and we did not start the first half well, in particular. I got the feeling that HSV did not want to, and we could not. We purely reacted rather than acted. Despite that, we did not give much away and got into the game more later on. We created some good chances but were too careless with our finishing. Nevertheless, it’s a point on the board and we don’t know just how important it could turn out to be.
