“We didn’t reach our maximum as a team”
HSV slipped to a narrow and somewhat unfortunate 1-0 defeat in Augsburg, conceding late on during their best spell of the match. At the same time, the team had to admit that they didn’t hit their usual level on matchday 11. We gathered the post-match thoughts from the disappointed Rothosen.
Nicolai Remberg: We weren’t intense enough in the first 30 minutes and didn’t manage to get stuck into our duels properly. We went in at half time with the score still level, and based on the improved second half we could have taken a point home. But overall, we have to accept that while not everything was bad, we didn’t really deserve more today.
Miro Muheim: We were simply too passive without the ball. We let the opposition play, we let them come onto us, and that always makes things difficult. Even so, we went in at 0-0 and were more solid after the break, and we also created some good chances up front. But instead of scoring ourselves, we conceded, and then you end up losing a game like this narrowly and unnecessarily again. It’s extremely disappointing.
"That we concede at that exact stage of the match is incredibly frustrating" Merlin Polzin
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: The team performance wasn’t what we set out to deliver today. We didn’t reach our maximum as a group, and that’s extremely frustrating. But the result is fair – we have to be honest about that – because there simply wasn’t more in it for us today.
Merlin Polzin: We’re very unhappy with how we started the match. We knew what to expect from a team that’s strong on the ball, but we didn’t stick to our patterns. That meant we had to work our way into the game step by step and reorganise at half time. We came out well, had a good chance straight away, but didn’t make enough of it. Then we make a couple of simple mistakes and concede at exactly that stage of the match, which is incredibly frustrating.
Sandro Wagner: We’d challenged ourselves to deliver today and we’re pleased with the win – it was good to give our fans another enjoyable afternoon. I’m really happy for the team because they deserved their reward after starting well and then managing to get the decisive goal late on. But it was hard work against a very strong HSV side, who play out from the back as well as almost any promoted team in recent years. That makes us even happier with the victory.
