“We dropped two points today”
HSV drew 0-0 with FC St. Pauli in the 100th same-city derby. Die Rothosen were understandably disappointed after the game as HSV.de presents the reactions to the game.
The greatly anticipated 100th same-city derby between HSV and FC St. Pauli ended goalless but the game itself will not live long in the memory of the 57,000 spectators in the Volksparkstadion. HSV were the more dominant side over the full 90 minutes, however could not find the breakthrough as they went goalless for the third game in a row. The HSV players were understandably disappointed as they wanted to give the fans the derby win.
Lewis Holtby: One point doesn’t feel great. I am really gutted but most of all about the last fifteen minutes of the game, where I feel we did not play football but instead just copied St. Pauli by playing long balls. We were clearly the better team even when we were not so threatening up front. We need to play in a way that the spectators want to see, which is attacking. It is a concern, that we cannot put into practice what we have worked on. It is up to us to be more creative and dangerous in front of goal. Despite the results early in the season, it is important to not forget that we are a young team that needs to settle into this league.
Khaled Narey: We wanted to win for the fans. It is a shame that we could not achieve want we wanted. We just could not find the goal. We tried but just did not find the final ball. St. Pauli did not provide any attacking threat. We dominated possession but without anything to show for it. It looks like we have forgotten how to score. We will not give up because the goals will come sooner or later.
Julian Pollersbeck: We are obviously disappointed because we really wanted to win. We dominated the game but we just missed the final ball. On the other hand, it was important to also not concede. I had noticed during the game that Cenk Sahin kept looking up to shoot but at the end of the game it looked more spectacular than it actually was. The support from the fans was great motivation for us and we really appreciate it.
Rick van Drongelen: It was two points dropped today. All of our opponents know that we like to dominate the possession, so they often like to set up very deeply against us. It means that you don’t have much room to operate and it’s difficult to break through. But there is a solution to every problem. Sometimes you have to play the ball back and forth 20 times before a gap opens up. We’re lacking a bit of luck at the moment. Something like a fortunate bounce, a penalty or a goal from a set piece would make things easier. We have a plan and we know what we can do. Every player has bought into it.
Ralf Becker: We imagined that things would go a lot differently, but at the end of the day, 0-0 was the right result. It was a war of attrition without any real goalscoring opportunities. We’re not pleased about that in particular. In the future, it is important that we find a middle ground whereby we are defensively stable and more dangerous in attack at the same time. The fans really wanted us to win, so from that perspective it is a shame that we could not deliver for them.
Christian Titz: I’m disappointed with how the game played out. We wanted to give our fans a derby win to celebrate. We were in control of the game and kept a clean sheet for the second game in a row, but we found it very difficult going forward. We didn’t make good enough use of the wings and as a result we didn’t get deep into the box very much. We had a good opportunity through Hwang, but that alone was definitely not enough.
Markus Kauczinski: We saw two teams with very different playstyles today. I’m really happy with our defensive performance, but we needed a bit more time to generate some dangerous chances in attack. Still, we did have two or three good opportunities. It was a very physical game. Sahin did have the chance to win the derby for us at the end, but I think the result was the correct one ultimately.
