“We just had to hold on to the lead”
HSV were knocked out of the DFB after losing on penalties to Holstein Kiel in the round of 16. A Bakery Jatta goal in extra time wasn’t enough for the Rothosen, as KSV managed to score a late equaliser and held their nerve from the spot. The disappointed HSV players spoke about the match after the final whistle.
Miro Muheim: The way the game went is really tough to take, since we just had to hold on to the lead. Of course, we’re not happy with our performance but, at the end of the day, nobody would be talking about that if we’d have won 1-0. However, the game took a horrible turn for us. Unfortunately, I missed my penalty, which is incredibly disappointing since we wanted to get to the next round.
Nicolai Remberg: When you get knocked out on penalties, it’s always awful. In normal time, it was a crazy game at points, but a draw was probably a fair result – you’ve just got to hold your hands up and admit it. The fact that it went to penalties, though, is frustrating, because I don’t think the moment that led to the free-kick and the Kiel equaliser was clear-cut. That being said, it’s our own fault, since we’ve got to manage moments like that better. We were unlucky in the shootout, even with Miro’s penalty because he just hit it too well, so getting knocked out really stings.
"Losing in a penalty shootout – that’s football, it’s part of the game" Daniel Peretz
Daniel Peretz: We desperately wanted to get to the next round, but losing in a penalty shootout happens – that’s football, it’s part of the game. Overall, we at least played pretty well for stretches of the game and had chances to put the game to bed in normal time but, ultimately, we’re standing here empty-handed. Like I said, though – it’s part of the game, especially in the knockout stages of the Pokal. We’ve got to accept that and carry on working.
Merlin Polzin: After a good start, we unfortunately took our foot off the gas. As a result, we’re disappointed with our performance and, of course, about going out. Today, there just wasn’t enough of what makes us stand out. Still, we had momentum on our side in extra time, and it simply should never be the case that we make silly mistakes before the final whistle, concede an equaliser, ultimately lose and get knocked out.
Marcel Rapp: Right from the outset, we showed that it was a special game for us with our performance. In the first half, we had good moments, before HSV had the biggest chance of the second half when they hit the post. Still, we stayed in the game and came back from behind in extra time, then won the game on penalties, which my team are over the moon about
