“We showed the true spirit of this team”
HSV scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time through Fabio Vieira to make it 2-1 against VfB Stuttgart – a goal that sent the Volksparkstadion into absolute chaos. Here are the post-match reactions.
Fabio Vieira: I’m unbelievably happy. Of course because of my first Bundesliga goal, but even more so because I was able to give something back to the fans for the support they give us in every single match. We fought until the very last and. We never gave up, even when we were down to ten men, and in the end we rewarded ourselves with the three points. This team is fantastic and I’m extremely happy to be part of it and of HSV. It means so much to me and just makes me happy.
Robert Glatzel: Because of my injury my emotions are obviously a bit mixed. I felt something in my thigh when I scored and tried to keep going, but realised it wasn’t getting better. I hope I came off in time so that I won’t out for too long. I’m still over the moon with my goal, which Alex set up perfectly, and the win. The ending was just incredible.
"I’m very proud of the team and the fans, who supported us unbelievably well." Nicolas Capaldo
Nicolai Remberg: The noise in the stadium today was unbelievable, especially during the counterattack that led to the winner. Before that, our plan to defend deep and hit them on the break worked really well and the opener was our deserved reward. We were really happy that Bobby got his goal. In the end we had to fight, and the way the match turned was just crazy and gives the team a huge boost. Whether the win was deserved in the end, I can’t really say , but it doesn’t matter. The only important thing is the three points.
Nicolas Capaldo: This win is so important and gives us so much energy. We showed that energy on the pitch as well. So much happened in that game. First the lead, then we had to deal with the equaliser, then the sending-off and then we go and win it in the last minute while playing with ten men - that’s just special. I’m very proud of the team and the fans, who supported us unbelievably well. It’s wonderful that we were able to give something back to them with this victory.
Miro Muheim: It’s really hard to describe what this feels like. Relief, pride, joy - that probably sums it up best. We fought for 94 minutes and gave absolutely everything. The two substitutes, Fabio and Fabio, combining for the winner is fantastic because it shows how we need every player in this squad. You could see how important every player is before that with Bobby’s goal. It’s great that we were rewarded today, and I’m especially happy for our fans, with whom we have a special connection.
"It means a lot to me because it shows that we’re all moving in the same direction" Merlin Polzin
Merlin Polzin: For us this was a very special afternoon of football, one that wrote a lot of stories: Bobby’s goal, his injury, the red card, and then the last-minute winner with that huge celebration with the whole team. It means a lot to me because it shows that we’re all moving in the same direction. We did all that against a Stuttgart side who are very strong on the ball and forced us to defend a lot. This match is the perfect kickoff to a very special week and a reward for the great work we put in and our incredible performance.
Sebastian Hoeneß: From our point of view, this is a very disappointing result. We started the match very well but then fell behind, which allowed HSV to sit even deeper and look for counters. We weren’t active enough in our build-up play, although that improved towards the end of the first half. We got the equaliser after the break in our best spell of the match, but HSV had their moments again and even with a man advantage we weren’t able to really put them under pressure. The ending was of course pretty brutal for us.
