Press conference

08.09.16

“We will have our work cut out”

Rothosen boss Bruno Labbadia spoke of coming opponents Bayer Leverkusen (Sept.10), the international break and team matters, at the official pre-match press conference in Hamburg on Thursday (08.09.).

The first break for international games was long, which is why we are all so excited to have the Bundesliga take centre stage again, HSV head coach Bruno Labbadia was as usual calm and collected as he faced the press at the official pre-match press conference ahead of the trick trip to Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 2 of the new season (10.09.16, 3.30 PM). The joy at the restart can be felt all around the club. Labbadia: „We will use the coming 50 hours or so to prepare for our next task.“

The coach spoke on the following topics…

… the international break: Many players have returned in positive mood which is always good. Bobby Wood played yesterday so he is the last one back. He took a knock to his ankle during the game and has a slight muscular problem which is why he was only able to lightly train today. Go Sakai is obviously tired after his long journey. I am a bit worried about playing Emir Spahic up front (laughs). Two goals for his national team surely makes him a weapon!

… team news: The loss of captain Johan Djourou to a thigh strain is very bitter for us. He will miss the trip to Leverkusen. We hope that he will be fit in time to face Leipzig and help the team again. Albin Ekdal is an option because we are thin on the ground regarding central defence and defensive midfield. Albin though needs careful build up because of his past injuries. We just have to make sure that we integrate the players as quickly as possible on their return from international duty. On the positive side Lewis Holtby is making good progress. You can sense that he is raring to play another good season. It is nice to have him back.

… New signing Douglas Santos: We must give him time. We know that he is there when we need him, but we still have to consider that he had a very short break after winning gold at the Rio Oympics. We are of course well aware of the strengths he brings to the team. In  the end we must decide what is best for the team.

… Bayer Leverkusen: Leverkusen is one of the strongest sides in the Bundesliga and have been playing Champions League football for years. I have a feeling that they could be title contenders again this season. They have an impressive array of technically gifted players and a solid structure which has been built up in recent years. They have a super squad and can easily compensate any losses. That process began as I was head coach there. We will have our work cut out on Saturday because we face a very skilled side. We will prepare accordingly over the coming couple of days.
