Welcome back! Fabio Vieira returns to HSV
The Rothosen are bringing one of last season’s standout Bundesliga players back to the Volkspark. This time, the 26-year-old playmaker joins HSV permanently from Arsenal FC. Hamburger SV completed the signing of top target Fabio Vieira from Arsenal FC on the final day of the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder, who immediately became the Rothosen’s top scorer during his loan spell last Bundesliga season with seven goals and five assists, not only won the hearts of HSV supporters but also left a lasting impression across the league. Vieira successfully completed his medical at the Athleticum at the Volkspark before signing a long-term contract with HSV.
“Fabio is a footballing artist in the truest sense of the word – a player with outstanding technical ability who can captivate spectators with his feel for the ball. He demonstrated that impressively during the past Bundesliga season,” explains Executive Board Member for Sport Kathleen Krüger. “That makes it all the more significant that a player of this quality has consciously chosen to be part of our journey and that, in only our second year following promotion, we have managed to secure him permanently for HSV. This is anything but something that can be taken for granted and sends a strong signal about our development. That development would not have been possible without the fantastic work carried out on the financial side over the past few years under Eric’s leadership. Huge credit goes to him, as well as to Claus, Merlin and our entire team, who have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to bring Fabio back. Sporting Director Claus Costa, who personally travelled to London again in recent days to underline HSV’s strong interest in Vieira in discussions with Arsenal FC, adds: “We all know what Fabio brings to the table. He was an absolute difference-maker for us last season and possesses qualities that add a special dimension to our game. That makes us even happier that he has clearly committed himself to our journey, the team and the club as a whole. We are absolutely delighted that, together, we have been able to make this transfer happen and that Fabio is now a long-term member of the HSV family. Fabio Daniel Ferreira Vieira was born on 30 May 2000 in Santa Maria da Feira, near Porto. Not far from there, he received his footballing education at Portuguese giants FC Porto between 2008 and 2020 before making his first-team debut for the northern Portuguese club in the summer of 2020.
Ahead of the 2022/23 season, Vieira – regarded as one of Europe’s top young talents after finishing as runner-up at the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and being named Player of the Tournament – joined Arsenal FC in the Premier League. After returning to his former club on loan for the 2024/25 season, the 1.70-metre creative midfielder joined Hamburger SV, also on loan, at the beginning of last season.
With his footballing brilliance and instinct for producing special moments, the left-footer immediately established a lasting place in the hearts of HSV supporters, registering 13 goal contributions in 31 competitive appearances. Now, that successful loan spell has turned into a long-term commitment.
“I’m very happy to be back here. I already know the club, the fans and many of my teammates, so it feels great to be part of it all again. I knew from the beginning that there might be an opportunity for me to come back here. I could feel how much HSV wanted to bring me back. Now I’m here again, and I can’t wait to get started,” says Vieira, whose squad number for the 2026/27 season has yet to be confirmed, upon his return to the Volkspark.
