“We’re heading into the winter break with a good feeling”
HSV drew 1-1 with Champions League participants Eintracht Frankfurt in the final match of the year. It was a well-deserved point to end the year, which the Rothosen assessed positively after the final whistle. Here are the reactions to the match.
Nicolas Capaldo: It was a good game. We got off to a strong start, scored the opening goal, and then conceded the equaliser a bit out of nowhere. The second half was honestly pretty difficult. Especially at the beginning, we had problems getting back into the game. But in situations like that, the crowd helps us, and towards the end of the match we had a lot of energy again and even scored another goal, even though it was unfortunately offside. Everyone was tired after such a hard-fought match, but in this stadium anything can happen. It’s a good feeling to be so strong at home – that’s very important for us. We’ve steadily developed over the course of the season and are generally doing a good job. Of course, there’s still room for improvement, but we’re on the right track.
Daniel Elfadli: It wasn’t the plan for me to play this long today. After an injury, it’s not easy to get back to full fitness, and on top of that I caught a slight cold. Then, during the warm-up, I found out that I had to step in for Jordan. I had to fight through it today, but it was fun to be back on the pitch. We’re happy with the point. Once again, we showed that we have good depth in the squad and can rotate players. In the second half, we went through a difficult phase for a long time against a high-pressure Frankfurt side, but we stayed true to our principles and didn’t lose patience defensively. We can be proud of that. We can look very positively at the season so far. We’ve established ourselves well, are delivering consistently good performances, and now we need to become more stable away from home and pick up more points.
“We can look very positively at the season so far”
Miro Muheim: We had a very good first half. We were excellent on the ball and caused the opponent a lot of problems. We had our chances going forward and defended everything apart from the goal we conceded. We really should have gone into half time with a two-goal lead. In the end, I’m glad we didn’t lose the game, because that wouldn’t have been fair on the performance. Overall, it’s been an intense year in which the fans, just like today, have been right behind us. We’re now heading into the winter break with a good feeling. We can be satisfied with the performance and take many positive things from this match.
Sambi Lokonga: We played against a very strong opponent, so we can be satisfied with the point. Of course, I’m happy about my fourth goal of the season. I’ve never scored this many goals in a single season in my career before. I feel very comfortable here. The whole team and the staff have given me a lot of confidence, and that’s important for my performances.
“A fine conclusion to an exciting year”
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: Given how the game went, a draw is fair. We were the better team in the first half, had a lot of possession, created plenty of pressure going forward, and scored the goal. In the second half, the opponent had more control of the game, but we still had our moments through counterattacks. Overall, we had a good feeling and good energy in our play. It was a fine conclusion to an energetic and exciting year.
Merlin Polzin: It’s a fair result after a hard-fought match. We played a really good first half. We managed to find good solutions in possession and implement what we had planned without the ball – especially when defending high up the pitch. At the same time, we gave the ball away a bit too carelessly. We simply have to defend the goal we conceded better. It was a big challenge against such a strong team like Eintracht, and I’m really pleased that the guys threw everything into it in the second half with their goal-line clearances. It was a good performance against a very strong team. It’s a deserved and appropriate end to the year.
Dino Toppmöller: It was a hard-fought and exciting match with a fair result. Of course, we wanted to take all three points, but at the same time we knew that HSV are not easy to play against at home. We didn’t have a good start and didn’t have a good first half. In the second half, we adjusted a few things and delivered a good performance. We had good control but didn’t take advantage of our big chances.
