"We were very clever"
HSV returned to action with a 2-0 away win over FC Schalke 04. Here's the reaction to the game.
Jonas Meffert: We played against a good opponent with good players and we’re happy to have go the win. We created our goals really well; that’s where our quality shows. We had the opportunity to put the game to bed with a third goal and we need to make better use of our counter attacks. However, we gave it our all; everyone was willing to defend and we made it difficult for the opposition. There’s a reason we’ve kept eight clean sheets.
Immanuel Pherai: We did well to find a way through for the goals in the first half – they were typical goals for us. We could have scored more in the second half, but we weren’t consistent enough with our opportunities.
Laszlo Benes: It was a great performance from us. We were compact at the back and also defended well. We could have played out the counter attacks better to score the third goal and closed the game out earlier. Overall, it's an important win.
Stephan Ambrosius: We worked really hard in the training camp, often with four sessions a day. We also put a lot of focus on defence. That worked well today, especially in the second half when we were called upon a lot at the back. I'm pleased with how we played and it’s a performance we can build on.
Tim Walter: We were very clever and played really well, especially in the first half. You never know exactly how things will go right after the winter break, but we made an impact in possession, played out the counter attacks well, and defended a lot. We didn't start the second half very well and we weren’t as consistent and had to defend a lot of corners. However, we threw ourselves into everything and we did a great job of implementing the things we worked on during the break, especially in counter attacks and defence. The boys defended set pieces really well, so a big compliment from me because it's not easy against the quality players that Schalke have, like Ouwejan. We want to get even better on the counter; that was lacking a bit in the second half.
Karel Geraerts: The first half was a tight game. The biggest difference was that they capitalised when they had the chances. That's a question of quality. In the second half, we did everything to get back into the game with a goal. We hit the crossbar three times in total; luck wasn’t really on our side. It was important that my team fought until the end.
