Long international break features all-Rothosen clash
Following Matchday 4, the Bundesliga heads into a longer-than-usual international break. HSV.de provides an overview of the eight Rothosen players called up by their national teams.
The first international window of the new 2026/27 season has arrived and will last longer than usual. FIFA has adjusted its international match calendar, meaning that there will now be just two international breaks in the autumn instead of three – one lasting 16 days and another lasting nine days. For international players, the change means less travelling and, overall, less time on the road with their national teams. Instead of 27 days, they will now spend “just” 24 days on international duty in autumn. The release period for the first window started Monday, 21 September, and runs until 6 October 2026. Eight Rothosen players will be away with their national teams during this period.
There will be a direct clash between three HSV players: Norway internationals Sander Tangvik and David Möller Wolfe will face Albert Grønbæk and Denmark on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Nations League. The game will take place in Oslo on Thursday (24 September), kicking off at 8.45pm. Norway will then face Portugal twice (27 September and 4 October) as well as Wales (1 October). Denmark, meanwhile, will also play Portugal (1 October) and Wales twice (27 September and 4 October).
Three more Rothosen players will be in action in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying: Zakaria El Ouahdi with Morocco, Patson Daka with Zambia and Warmed Omari with Comoros. Morocco will face Gabon (25 September) and Lesotho (29 September), followed by a friendly against Ghana on 4 October. Zambia will take on Algeria (25 September) and Togo (29 September). Omari and Comoros will face Cameroon (24 September) and Namibia (29 September), whose national team is coached by former HSV player Collin Benjamin, who made 191 competitive appearances for HSV during his playing career. There will also be a friendly against Senegal on 4 October, with the match taking place in Marseille, France.
In addition, two HSV academy graduates, Otto Stange and Louis Lemke, have been called up to the Germany youth teams. Stange has received his first call-up to the U20 squad, while Lemke has been selected for the U19s for the first time. In La Nucia, Spain, Stange will face France (25 September), Italy (29 September) and England (3 October). Lemke will take part in a five-nation tournament in Spain, facing Ukraine (27 September), Finland (30 September) and Czechia (3 October).
“We are proud that HSV once again have so many international players. During my time here, that hasn’t always been the case. In the past, there were a maximum of two or three players away on international duty; now the number is significantly higher,” HSV head coach Merlin Polzin said ahead of last Saturday’s (19 September) 2-1 home win over 1. FC Köln.
While the eight players are away on international duty, those remaining in Hamburg will play a friendly against FC Copenhagen on 4 October at 3.30pm at the Volksparkstadion.
