Match Preview vs 1.FC Köln
Cup fever hits Germany as the DFB Pokal is back for the Last 16! HSV will travel to NRW to face an impressive Köln team on Tuesday evening.
The side from the Rhein have experienced themselves quite the first season under the eye of Steffen Baumgart this year. Until this weekends defeat to Champions FC Bayern München, Effzeh were sitting in the top six. HSV started their year with a seemingly disappointing draw against SG Dynamo Dresden. The result meant HSV slipped to 5th in the league table but other results, calming the worries.
The sides haven’t met in a competitive fixture since the Billy Goats were promoted to the Bundesliga in 2019. HSV were unbeaten in their only two fixtures against Köln in the 2. Bundesliga, 1 win and 1 draw. The sides have managed eight different DFB Pokal meetings with the earliest in the 1953 Semi final and the latest in the Last 16 of the 2016/17 season.
Two massive traditional clubs will go toe to toe come Tuesday evening in the west of Germany, a spectacle is sure to unfold at the Rheineenergiestadion.
Köln in the Pokal:
1st Round : 1-1 (2-4 Pens) vs Carl Zeiss Jena
2nd Round : 0-2 vs VfB Stuttgart
Köln have made it a habit during this seasons Pokal of leaving it late to put themselves back into the hat. Back at the start of the season, against Regionalliga Nordost side Carl Zeiss Jena, Baumgarts side were taken all the way to a penalty shootout after the 4th tier side took an early lead in the game, cancelled out by Ellyes Skhiri. A 4-2 Victory on penalty kicks, would have stressfully and reluctantly put the Billy Goats into the next round.
Again, late goals being the Effzeh way. This time relying on, now top goalscorer, Anthony Modeste. After playing a stalemate for 70 minutes against fellow Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart, the French striking hero popped up with two goals in 6 minutes to consolidate a place in the Last 16 against HSV.

HSV in the Pokal:
1st Round : 1-2 vs Eintracht Braunschweig
2nd Round : 1-1 (2-4) vs 1.FC Nürnberg
Jan Gyamerah and Robert Glatzel struck for HSV against lower league opposition Eintracht Braunschweig. Despite a spirted comeback from the 3.Liga side a 2-1 scoreline was enough to put the 3 time Pokal champions into the 2nd round against 1.FC Nürnberg.
A tightly contested contest against our fellow 2.Liga, who were at the time were in impressive form. Despite a first half Jonas David header, Nürnberg found themselves back into the match through Duman. The match went the distance and after a long and spirited 120 minutes of football, a penalty shootout had to decide the game. Heuer Fernandes and Jonas David were the hero’s of the Pokal in the end with Ferro making two great saves will David ended the night as he started, with the ball in the back of the net.
