Match Preview vs 1.FC Nürnberg

A trip to Bavaria for HSV as we play a familiar opponent in 1.FC Nürnberg for the 2nd round of the DFB Pokal.

Not so long ago we met our 2. Bundesliga colleagues on league matters. This time around, its for the cup! The DFB Pokal second round draw paired us with in-form 1.FC Nürnberg away from home in the all 2.Liga clash.

Neither side could be separated in a 2-2 draw at the Volksparkstadion just last month. A brace from top goalscorer Robert Glatzel was cancled out goals from Valentini and Templemann to earn both sides a point in a very entertaining fixture.

The sides have three meetings in the DFB Pokal but most recently in the 2018/19 season. HSV fans will have fair memories of this campaign with a run all the way to the semi-final before narrowly missing out on a space in the final following defeat to RB Leipzig. A 1-0 win at the Volksparkstadion in February of that year though sent the Rothosen on their way to that Semi-Final run.

Cup Preview

It was not so long ago since we shared a pitch with our cup opponents. Less than a month ago, HSV and 1.FC Nürnberg played out a 2-2 draw at the Volksparkstadion. Since this game, Der Club have managed to retain their early season form and still remain the only team in the 2.Bundesliga unbeaten after 11 matchdays.

A stunning 4-0 victory at the weekend against 1.FC Heidenheim which featured a dream free kick goal from Joannes Geis. That result keeps Nürnberg in 4th place in the table and keeping up with the pack in top 3 positions.

Last time out

Although cup games are never taken with the same vain as league fixtures, Nürnberg know that only too well. HSV had what ended up being quite a comfortable victory in the previous round against 3. Liga side Eintracht Braunschweig, 2-1. Nürnberg on the other hand were close to one of the first round upsets as a late goal was the only thing that separated them and Regionalliga side SSV Ulm in their tightly fought contests. A reminded that anything could happen in the cup!
