Match Preview vs Karlsruher SC
League action goes out of the way as Cup fever hits the North! Karlsruher SC visit the Volksparkstadion for the Quarter final of the DFB Pokal.
KSC are next in our 2021/22 DFB Pokal adventure! Hopefully it doesn’t stop there. Fellow 2.Liga side have endured a pretty similar path overcoming a Bundesliga side on their way to the Quarter Finals. As well as also having only away matches in the cup this season.
Christian Eichner’s team is one HSV know only too well. A 1-1 draw in our only league meeting so far this season, thanks to a wonder goal from Sonny Kittel, and 3-1 friendly win during our Wintertraining camp in Spain sets up a third meeting of the season between the sides.
The cup is always full of surprises as the Rothosen know, following how the victory of Köln ended. The only all 2.Bundesliga clash, floodlights on in the Volksparkstadion and a feisty Quarter Final tie is anticipated.
KSC in the Pokal:
1st Round : 1-4 vs Sportfreunde Lotte
2nd Round : 1-2 vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Last 16: 0-1 vs 1860 München
An impressive Pokal run so far from our 2.Liga colleagues. KSC started off with a routine win of Regionalliga Nord side Sportfreunde Lotte but it was the 2nd Round of the competition that caught peoples eyes. A 2-1 Victory of 3rd place in the Bundesliga Bayer Leverkusen. Not only a win but a promising and convincing performance from the Baden side.
Last time out they were tipped heavily to go out to 3.Liga side 1860 München but the cup upset was avoided thanks to a Marvin Wantizek goal in the second half with put KSC in the hat for the Quarter Finals.
HSV in the Pokal:
1st Round : 1-2 vs Eintracht Braunschweig
2nd Round : 1-1 (2-4) vs 1.FC Nürnberg
Last 16: 1-1 (3-4) vs 1.FC Köln
HSV have booked their place in the Quarter Finals of the DFB Pokal following wins over sides in all three of Germany’s top divisions. Eintracht Braunschweig (3.Liga), 1.FC Nürnberg (2.Liga) and 1.FC Köln (Bundesliga).
The last round threw up some proper cup entertainment with a goalless opening 90 minutes in the Domstadt before a quick Robert Glatzel header in Extra Time had HSV with a foot in the hat for the next round. But, as all cup games go, it wasn’t to be so easy. Anthony Modeste smashed home a last minute penalty as the sides were destined for the Penalty Shootout.
HSV would eventually overcome the Bundesliga side 4-3 on penalties but again not to a bit of entertainment involved. Köln winger Florian Kainz tripped in his run up, resulting in a two foot contact with the ball before it went into the net, by the rules, the penalty was void and HSV would celebrate into the night.
