HSV draw 1-1 at Bayer Leverkusen on final day
The Rothosen picked up a point at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on matchday 34 of the Bundesliga. Fabio Vieira (61’) and Jarell Quansah (78’) scored the goals, while goalkeeper Sander Tangvik produced a superb display on his HSV debut.
On Saturday, 16th May, Hamburger SV drew 1-1 away to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the final day of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. In front of 30,210 spectators at a sold-out BayArena, the two sides played out an open game in which the hosts enjoyed more control but were repeatedly denied by Bundesliga debutant Tangvik in the HSV goal, including when he saved a Patrik Schick penalty (25’). The Rothosen then grew into the game and had good chances of their own, but were unable to find the breakthrough before the interval. Leverkusen took charge again after the restart, only for HSV to strike against the run of play via Fabio Vieira’s opener (61’). The Werkself eventually levelled through a deflected Quansah header in the 78th minute, which was fortunate in its execution but deserved overall. The draw and results elsewhere saw HSV end their first season back in the Bundesliga strongly, finishing 13th on 38 points.

Tangvik enjoys a dream debut …
Head coach Merlin Polzin made three changes to the side that beat SC Freiburg 3-2 at home, with Tangvik, Jordan Torunarigha and Rayan Philippe coming in for Daniel Heuer Fernandes, Bakery Jatta and Ransford Königsdörffer. The latter was not in the squad having felt unwell in the morning. The Norwegian goalkeeper, who was making his Bundesliga debut, was immediately called into action, producing a strong save to deny Schick in the eighth minute. When the Leverkusen striker next threatened, Torunarigha made a superb last-ditch challenge to prevent the hosts taking the lead. The opening 15 minutes belonged to the Werkself, who took control through long spells of possession, before HSV created their first big chance on the break. Nicolas Capaldo met a brilliant Philippe cross from close range, but his header came back off the bar. This was HSV’s 15th effort against the woodwork this season (17’).
Five minutes later, Tangvik was at it again, saving with his feet in a one-on-one with Maza. And there was more to come. The 23-year-old was outstanding in the next key moment too, clawing away Schick’s penalty to spark celebrations in the away end. The Czech forward had won the spot kick himself after slight contact from Torunarigha. HSV then began to press higher up the pitch, spent more time in the Leverkusen half and created further chances. Capaldo and Torunarigha worked their way into the box through some nice passing play, but Albert Grönbaek was denied by Culbreath at the crucial moment (40’). Shortly before that, Sambi Lokonga had tested Flekken from distance, while Philippe also forced the Leverkusen goalkeeper into a save with a dipping effort from range. The final word of the first half belonged to Tangvik once again, as he produced another fine stop to keep out Tillman’s header (45’+2).

… before Vieira stunner is cancelled out
HSV started slowly after the break, while Leverkusen picked up where they had left off. Maza found space to shoot twice in quick succession, but missed the target both times. At the other end, Fabio Vieira forced Flekken into a save with a curling effort on his weaker right foot after an excellent run (54’). Almost immediately after that rare moment of relief for HSV, Schick had Leverkusen’s next attempt on goal. The Rothosen had very little control of the game at that stage, but Fabio Vieira still produced another moment of magic. This time, the Portuguese playmaker shifted the ball onto his left foot and whipped it into the top-left corner from around 18 yards. His superb solo goal made it 1-0 and completely changed the feel of the second half (61’).
Both coaches made their first changes after the opening goal, with Miro Muheim returning from injury for HSV. Leverkusen initially continued to waste chances through Schick and Hofmann, before the Rothosen ultimately played an unfortunate part in the equaliser. A free-kick delivery from the left was headed by Quansah onto the shoulder of Nicolai Remberg, and the deflection leaving Tangvik with no chance (78’). The game lost some of its rhythm after a series of substitutions, but HSV had several opportunities to retake the lead during seven minutes of added time. Substitutes William Mikelbrencis and Fabio Balde, as well as Capaldo, passed up chances on the break in quick succession. At the other end, Tangvik again impressed by saving a Grimaldo strike from distance. When the goalkeeper was finally beaten in the closing minute, Capaldo rescued HSV by denying Maza and preventing a late killer blow that would have been harsh on the visitors.
