“I had actually watched his penalties at the hotel beforehand”
Hamburger SV battled to a 1-1 draw away at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the final day of the season. Read all the reaction to the game, including from the man of the moment, Sander Tangvik.
Sander Tangvik: I’m very happy. You don’t make your Bundesliga debut and put in a good performance every day. I really enjoyed the game. It felt good. For the penalty, I made my decision in the moment. I had actually watched his penalties at the hotel beforehand. I can’t reveal any more than that. (laughs) Today was about enjoying the moment. I’ve worked very hard for it. I always try to work as hard as possible and be a good teammate, someone who puts a smile on my own face and on other people’s too. If I went around in a bad mood just because I wasn’t playing, that would damage the team spirit.
Miro Muheim: Both teams had chances to win it. There were a lot of opportunities at both ends. When I came on, I felt like it was really end-to-end. We would have liked to win, but it was a good performance from us, so we’re happy. My aim was to get back on the pitch again this season. It’s been a special campaign. Seeing the progress we’ve made is impressive. There have been highs and lows, but that’s part of football. We can be proud of ourselves because we secured survival with time to spare.
“Hats off to the team.”
Nicolai Remberg: Leverkusen had a lot more of the ball, were more dominant and made life difficult for us. Even so, I think we could have won it as well. We defended compactly. If we’d made even more of our moments on the break, we could have come away with more than a point. Hats off to the team for the way we finished the season. The goal we conceded was unfortunate, and I apologised to Sander as well because the ball hit my shoulder. He was incredible today – to come in as the back-up goalkeeper on the final day and perform like that. It was an absolutely brilliant display from him.
Fabio Vieira: I try to help my teammates as much as possible in every game. Today I scored a fantastic goal, which I’m very happy about. I had a good season, but the most important thing was that HSV achieved our goal. I’m happy to have been part of that. I have to praise to the fans as well for the way they always supported us. They were always there, whether we were playing at home or away. They were incredible this season and deserve to be part of moments like that goal.
“He’s prepared to have a slightly shorter holiday.”
Merlin Polzin: I’d like to view today’s game as a representation of the incredible season we’ve had with HSV. After the final whistle, I thanked the team for a very special campaign and for their trust. I’m sitting here as a very happy coach, and I’ll go into the next few days in a good mood as we analyse the season and then get some rest.
I’m really pleased that Sander was able to carry the performances he has been showing in training into a game. It was a superb display from him. From his very first training session, he showed that our investment in him had paid off. He has not only made Ferro and the team better, but himself, too. He has improved day by day. It was only a matter of time before people beyond our training ground, across German football, took notice. Today was a huge statement ahead of what is coming this summer. The Norwegian national team can rely on him if they need him. He’s prepared to have a slightly shorter holiday. (smiles)
Kasper Hjulmand: It was a game with lots of big chances and a penalty too. It was perhaps our best match of the season. We simply have to win a game like that, so it’s disappointing. We tried everything to reach the Champions League right until the end. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage it. Even so, I have to give huge credit to the players and staff for how hard everyone has worked.
