“We embraced the battle and ground out the win”
HSV booked their place in the DFB-Pokal round of 16 with a 1-0 victory at Heidenheim on Wednesday evening thanks to Robert Glatzel’s penalty in the 83rd minute. We gathered the reaction to a hard-fought cup tie.
Robert Glatzel: It’s typical football – and a bit crazy – that I was able to score the decisive goal today after the emotional rollercoaster of the past weeks. And to do it right in front of our fans, who always support all of us and me personally so strongly, means a lot. Those were really emotional moments for me. I didn’t see the penalty incident clearly, but as soon as it was given, I knew I’d take it. It feels fantastic to win and go through – that was hugely important. We want to keep going exactly like this.
Miro Muheim: I think we played very well. It was a real battle, but we embraced it and after the last few games where we played well but still lost, today we finally managed to grind out the win. We stayed focused, even against ten men, because playing with an extra man can be tricky. Heidenheim defended well, but in the end we deserved the win. We’re delighted to go through, and of course especially for Bobby – things haven’t been easy for him lately and he was rewarded for sticking at it.
“At the end we got the goal and saw it out professionally” Nicolai Remberg
Nicolai Remberg: We started well and obviously the red card for them played into our hands a bit. In the end we got the goal and saw it out professionally. Overall it was another good performance from us, like the last two games – only this time we won. So of course it’s a good evening for us.
Merlin Polzin: We’re very happy to win a very challenging away cup tie and reach the next round. We started well, created some good chances and after the red card managed the different nature of the game with concentration. We talked about that clearly at half time. We didn’t create enough chances after the break – that’s one thing I didn’t like so much – but in the end we won as a team. The players showed that we stick together, support each other and work for one another. That’s the most important thing for us, and I’m proud of that.
Frank Schmidt: HSV had the first two big chances and we just about managed to avoid conceding early. But we still produced an emotional performance and a proper cup fight. With ten men it obviously didn’t get any easier, but we closed the spaces well. HSV deserved the win in the end, but the way the decisive penalty came about is frustrating. For me personally, there wasn’t enough there for a penalty. But we don’t want to be bad losers – we gave everything, but in the end we couldn’t turn it our way.
