“Promotion is the most important thing. It’s something incredible”
HSV missed the chance to secure the 2. Bundesliga title after a 3-2 final-day defeat to Fürth, but can still celebrate a long-awaited and richly deserved return to the Bundesliga, which had already been confirmed on the previous matchday. We have the reaction from the final game of the season ahead of the Rothosen’s return to the Bundesliga.
Sebastian Schonlau: We were fully focused on this game, and obviously would have wanted it to go differently today, but the most important thing is that we got promoted. This club have been waiting for that for seven years, and it’s something incredible which we’ve all achieved together. That’s why we’re looking forward to tomorrow and to celebrating with the fans, who have given us unbelievable support all the way. We’ve been promoted together, and that’s all that counts!
Davie Selke: We would have liked to win the title, but we can still be very proud of ourselves and of getting promoted. This club means so much to so many people, and we injected that feeling into the team. That had a huge impact on our season. I’m proud of us and what we’ve achieved together. Today, we’re disappointed with this defeat, but from tomorrow onwards, we’ll celebrate promotion. It’s also a great achievement for me to have finished top scorer. I’m dedicating this award to the whole team.
“We achieved promotion as a team and a club as a whole. We can be really proud of that” Daniel Heuer Fernandes
Robert Glatzel: Obviously we’re disappointed about today, but promotion is the most important thing. You could tell that today was huge for Fürth. We wanted to win too, but we didn’t manage it. We have to blame ourselves for that. We can still be proud of ourselves and of getting promoted though. It was a special moment for me to be back in the starting line-up for the first time since my long-term injury, and I was even able to mark it with a goal.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: We tried everything once again in the second half, but we couldn’t turn the game in our favour. Our aim today was to win the match and the title, but the number one aim overall was promotion. And we achieved promotion as a team and a club as a whole. We can be really proud of that.
“We’ve secured promotion. That’s the most important thing! We’ve worked unbelievably hard for this” Jonas Meffert
Jonas Meffert: We were very close to turning this game around, but it wasn’t enough in the end. I’m still happy with what we’ve done though. We’ve given everything and secured promotion. That’s the most important thing! We’ve worked unbelievably hard for this, so we’re really looking forward to celebrating with the fans on Monday.
Merlin Polzin: I have mixed feelings, because our performance wasn’t what we were hoping for today. The team stuck together through the setbacks and created more dangerous moments with the overturned penalty and the disallowed goal, but it wasn’t enough. That was really disappointing for me and for us. We need to put this into perspective though. Over the whole season, we’ve put any doubts and difficulties behind us and achieved promotion, after seven years, through our very hard work. We can be really proud of that, regardless of the result today. That’s why I’m very much looking forward to tomorrow and to celebrating with the fans at the Rathausmarkt. These will be very special moments for everyone associated with HSV.
