A perfect evening of football
In the DFB Pokal quarter-finals, HSV provided a memorable cup evening with a 5:4 victory after a penalty shoot-out against KSC. After the match, the Rothosen were overjoyed to have reached the semi-finals.
Hamburg has not experienced such a cup evening for a long time: Hamburger SV was already 2-0 down against Karlsruher SC in the DFB Pokal quarter-finals, but equalised the score late in stoppage time through double player Robert Glatzel and then prevailed in the penalty shoot-out thanks to three foiled penalties in a row by goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes. A madness that, in addition to the Rothosen on the pitch, sent almost all 25,000 spectators in the Volksparkstadion, sold out under Corona conditions, into complete ecstasy. "Berlin, Berlin, we're going to Berlin!" echoed several times through the stadium after the end of the game, in which the man of the match was also celebrated separately. The protagonists' comments on this memorable evening were correspondingly euphoric.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: It was a hard piece of work. KSC also deserved to win. We are overjoyed to have delivered such a cup fight. We put everything into it, were always on the ball and always wanted to score goals. It was also outstanding how we scored the 2:2 in injury time. We always believed in ourselves and that's what distinguishes us this season. We are overjoyed today.
Robert Glatzel: It is indescribable, an outstanding moment. It was a perfect evening of football. A dramatic end with a better ending for us. We were lucky that we scored the equaliser directly after the 0:2. We didn't give up. It was really great with the fans - they supported us from the first to the last second.
"I'm very proud of my team, how they always come back, never give up and overcome all odds." Tim Walter
David Kinsombi: "It's a really awesome feeling. It wasn't always easy in between, KSC really fought back and put everything on the line. We did well and always tried to stay calm. We can only praise the boys: It's not easy when the opponent makes a lot out of a few chances and you make little out of many. But we turned it around. That is simply outstanding.
Tim Walter: It's hard to look back on this game soberly so soon after the end. The emotions are still there. Our joy is very great. At the same time, I find the KSC's dejection very regrettable. There is only one winner in a penalty shootout. We were the luckier team thanks to an outstanding goalkeeper. In terms of the course of the game, we saw a very intense match. We made life a bit difficult for ourselves in the first half and fell behind. We rallied in the dressing room, then got the next blow. The way the boys then played through their game was very, very good. That's what I'd like to see in the future for the entire duration of the game. I am very proud of my team, how they always come back, never give up and overcome all odds.
Christian Eichner: We saw an outstanding game of football from two teams that have known each other long enough. The whole game showed what both teams stand for. We needed a bit to get into the game. But the boys got a better grip on it. The longer the game lasted in the first half, the better we had it under control from our point of view. From the quality of the chances we took the lead, not undeservedly. After half-time, we even have the break with the 2:0. Then comes the brutal thing in football: the quick goal against. A few minutes later, we got a penalty and a yellow-red card, which meant almost an hour of deprivation. The equaliser came in the 91st minute. Football can be so brutal. The penalty shoot-out is a lottery. There was everything the game had to offer. Congratulations to HSV.
