DFB match day action for climate protection

The DFB has declared the first round of this year's cup competition an action match day to send a signal for climate protection together with all participating clubs. HSV is using this occasion to communicate the expansion of its activities in the area of ecological sustainability.

Uniform measures at all DFB Pokal matches

This weekend, the first DFB Pokal round 2022/23 will be played under the banner of climate protection. HSV is the guest of SpVgg Bayreuth on Saturday (30 July, kick-off: 3.30 pm). Several uniform measures will be implemented around this match day: For example, a joint fundraising campaign will be carried out in which all participating clubs will donate 100 euros via the DFB to a climate protection project for every goal they score (penalty shootout excluded).

Ecological sustainability at HSV

HSV uses the action match day as an opportunity to inform about the expansion of its activities in the field of ecological sustainability. Marieke Patyna, Chief Strategy, People & Sustainability Officer (CSO), puts the Action Match Day in context for HSV: "Climate protection is important not only on this Action Match Day, but on every day of the year. We as HSV are asked to keep giving ourselves and others an impetus for climate protection measures and sustainable development. We are still at the beginning of our journey, but we are continuously working on concepts and measures for environmental sustainability."

In the 2022/23 season, HSV's professional team will travel to away matches in the 2nd Bundesliga and the DFB Cup in a climate-neutral manner. The away trips will be made as environmentally friendly as possible by choosing the means of transport in order to first reduce CO2 emissions and then compensate for the remaining emissions. For the upcoming DFB Cup match in Bayreuth, the Rothosen will travel by train.

HSV is also paying more attention to climate-friendly concepts at home matches. The Volkspark Stadium is supplied with green electricity and the CO2 emissions of the returnable cup system introduced for the 2021/22 season are only around 1.2 per cent of the previous emissions from disposable cups. In addition, half of the deposit donations are donated to an environmental project. An overview of other corporate responsibility activities in the environmental field of action can be found here.

Fan mobility

Fan mobility is a major factor in CO2 emissions in professional football. HSV is raising awareness among its supporters to travel by public transport or to form car pools. At the away game in Bayreuth, more regional fan clubs will be taken into account when selling tickets in order to show appreciation for HSV fans outside Hamburg and to avoid long journeys with high CO2 emissions.
