Dompé: "That's exactly why I was brought in".
In a media roundtable, the French newcomer spoke about his debut against Darmstadt, his first days at HSV and his strengths in one-on-one.
Fast, tricky, courageous - the desire for spectacular one-on-one players has been great at the Volksparkstadion in recent years: Tatsuya Ito, the little Japanese whirlwind who once received chants from the stands after spirited dribbles in his HSV professional debut in the North derby against Werder Bremen, knows this, as do Ogechika Heil and Xavier Amaechi, who have boldly forged ahead on the flanks in the still young current season. With the arrival of Jean-Luc Dompé, another player joins the list of small, fast-paced and dribbling wingers. The difference: The 27-year-old Frenchman is no longer a youngster, but a seasoned player who has dribbled for several well-known Belgian clubs over the past seven years. Last season, 2021/22, the 1.70-metre right-footer marked two goals and 14 assists for Zulte Waregem in the Belgian First Division. "Jean-Luc is fit and can go over 90 minutes. There is nothing against him playing from the start. You have seen that he helps us in any case. I'm glad he's here," explained HSV coach Tim Walter during a media round yesterday. Today it was the Frenchman's turn to answer the questions of the media representatives.
Among other things, Jean-Luc Dompé spoke about ...
... his first days at HSV: "I received a very warm welcome from the coaches, players and the whole staff. I am very happy to be here now. The conditions are right to achieve the best for the club.
... his favourite position: I feel most comfortable on the left wing. That's where I've played the most games in the past few years. At the same time, as a right-footer, I can also attack on the opposite side.
... his qualities: One-on-one is definitely a strength of mine. The coach wants creative players on the wing who can find solutions in such situations. That's exactly why I was brought in. The people in charge of the team showed me this perspective again and again before the transfer.
... his debut against Darmstadt: "We started the game very badly, but then managed to improve as the game went on. Unfortunately, the red card destroyed the flow a bit. Overall, such games with many red cards can happen in football. That didn't really affect me.
... his environment: I arrived in Hamburg with my wife and my five-year-old daughter. We are currently still looking for a flat and hope to find one quickly. I've heard that I'm the first Frenchman at HSV. That surprised me, after all, the club has so much tradition. I now want to leave my footprint here in the best possible way.
