Halfway there: The HSV season in numbers
The Rothosen are just past the halfway mark in the 2019/20 2. Bundesliga season, with eight victories, seven draws and three defeats from the first 18 games before the Christmas break. To give you an overview of the season up until now, the most interesting numbers from the pre-Christmas period have been summarised below.
0 – HSV are the only team in the second division who haven’t conceded a penalty so far this season. On the other hand the Rothosen have been given three penalties, all of which have been converted (Hunt during the 1-1 draw with Darmstadt, Hinterseer during the 4-2 win in Karlsruhe and Kittel during the 6-2 win against Stuttgart).
2 – The black, white and blue side of Hamburg are not just in second position in the league table, but also in terms of goals conceded. Only Heidenheim’s Kevin Müller has conceded less goals (18) than Daniel Heuer Fernandes and Osnabrück’s Philipp Kühn (19).
6 – The Rothosen (or Red Shorts) emerged as victors eight times during the Hinrunde, and were able to win by more than a one-goal margin on six occasions. During the away game in Nuremberg and the home games against Aue and Stuttgart Hecking’s troops were able to dispatch the opposition by a four-goal margin. This constitutes a significant change compared to the year before, with eight of the 11 HSV victories before the winter break being by a mere goal just a year ago.
9 – One of the discoveries of the first half of the season, not just in Hamburg but league-wide, was the attacking prowess of HSV left-back Tim Leibold. Nine assists in eighteen games means a return of an assist every other game, putting the 26-year-old out on his own in the second division as an assist machine, in front of Bochum’s Danny Blum with eight.
12 – A dozen Hamburg players have been able to add their name to the scoresheet so far this season in the second division, with Sonny Kittel out on his own on nine goals, putting the 27-year-old in fifth place league-wide. Lukas Hinterseer is hot on his heels with six, whilst David Kinsombi, Bakery Jatta and Aaron Hunt all have three.
19 – Referees have had an easier time in charge of Hamburg games, only having to reach into their pockets 19 times in the first 18 games to caution a Hamburg player, the lowest amount of yellow cards in the division. One of the reasons for the good disciplinary record is the 165 fouls the Rothosen have committed, another category where they lead the rest of the pack.
23 – Almost two thirds of HSV’s league goals were scored after the restart, 23 of 36 coming after halftime to be precise.
36 – Hecking’s charges weren’t afraid to let fly in the first half of the season, having 295 shots on goal, with only Stuttgart being more trigger-happy on 321. 36 of these shots ended in goals, exactly two goals a game, a mark that no other side could match. The Rothosen have proved much more dangerous than just a year previously, at which point they had 25 goals to their name.
1,620 – Daniel Heuer Fernandes and Tim Leibold were the only two Hamburg players who completed 90 minutes in all 18 of the 2. Liga games so far in 2019/20. Only 21 other players in the league managed to achieve the same feat.
8,856 – The Rothosen played an average of 492 passes per game up until the Christmas break, equalling 8,856 in total. 86% of these passes reached their intended target.
47,490 – Only VfB Stuttgart were able to count on more supporters at home games than the Rothosen, with an average of 47,490 supporters packing out the Volksparkstadion for the first eight home games of the season.
