HSV celebrates Hamburg Pride Week

HSV will be taking part in the colorful celebrations of Hamburg Pride Week around tomorrow's home match against 1.FC Heidenheim, setting an example for a Volksparkstadion without discrimination.

This year's Christopher Street Day (CSD)* (*see glossary) will take place tomorrow, Saturday (6 August), in parallel with HSV's second home match of the 2022/2023 second division season against 1. FC Heidenheim. The CSD marks the climax of Hamburg Pride Week, which has been running for a week now and during which the Hanseatic city of Hamburg will once again be dressing in rainbow colours from 29 July to 8 August and collectively setting an example for diversity. HSV will be taking part in the colourful celebrations at the home match against FCH.

Activities for the home game

In keeping with Pride Week, the Volkspark Stadium will be lit up by LED bands and corner flags in the rainbow look, the LGBTIQ+* colours. The well-known "Raute ist Vielfalt" (rhombus is diversity) banner has also already been placed in the stadium, so that tomorrow's home game will be completely dedicated to diversity. Furthermore, the "Welcoming Out" movement, of which HSV is a patron, will be represented on LED boards and on the stadium screen. Here you can find all the information on the "Welcoming Out" campaign and HSV's participation.

With the actions around the match day, Hamburger SV is thus once again sending a signal that discrimination in the Volksparkstadion and everywhere in the world is to be condemned. The past home match against Hansa Rostock, where individuals displayed a homophobic banner, makes it clear that despite all the commitment on the part of HSV against homophobia in recent years, there is still much to be done. HSV has clearly distanced itself from this unacceptable incident and has since been working intensively to clarify it.

"Welcoming Out" Movement

HSV wants to continue to do sustainable work against discrimination, which is why the club joined the "Welcoming Out" movement as a patron a few weeks ago. The core thesis of "Welcoming Out" is that most heterosexual people have an open and accepting attitude towards LGBTIQ+ people, but unfortunately very few express this proactively.

"Welcoming Out" is a symbol that heterosexual people can use to signal to those around them that they would react positively to a possible coming out* towards them, thus dissolving any fears of a rejecting attitude. With "Welcoming Out" there is the possibility to show an open and accepting attitude in a low-threshold way. It is not primarily about changing attitudes, but about making existing attitudes visible.

For this reason, HSV calls on all fans who can identify with the idea of "Welcoming Out" to join the movement. Free buttons and stickers are available in the HSV Arena Store. Together with its fans, HSV wants to make it visible that the people who consider discriminatory statements to be acceptable are clearly outnumbered.
