HSV end season with 3-2 defeat at Fürth
HSV were beaten at SpVgg Greuther Fürth in their final 2. Bundesliga game. Klaus made himself man of the match with a hat trick, while Dompe and Glatzel found the net for the Rothosen.
On Sunday, 18th May, Hamburger SV suffered a 3-2 defeat to SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Matchday 34 of the 2. Bundesliga. In front of 16,126 spectators at a sold-out Sportpark am Ronhof, the Rothosen started the better but were unable to find the opener. Instead, Fürth’s Klaus broke the deadlock just before the half-time whistle (41’). Soon after the restart, HSV equalised through Dompe (50’), before they fell behind again after two more goals from Klaus (57’, 63’). Glatzel set up a grandstand finish when he cut the deficit in the 67th minute, but, in the end, the Rothosen ended the 2024/25 season with a defeat, and dropped from the top of the table into second place.

Behind despite a strong start …
Head coach Polzin made four changes to his starting eleven from the 6-1 win over SSV Ulm which secured promotion for the Rothosen. Captain Schonlau, Karabec, Balde and Glatzel got the nod over Poreba, Königsdörffer, Sahiti and Selke. HSV, who knew a win would guarantee the 2. Bundesliga title, took the initiative early on. On around the ten-minute mark, Reis had the first real effort of the game, but he couldn’t get the right contact. The hosts were defensively compact, and themselves needed a win to guarantee survival. They launched their first dangerous attack, but Balde was able to clear Asta’s cross. The Rothosen then began to pepper the Fürth goal again. Mikelbrencis had a shot from range following a corner, before Balde took on another good strike after a cross from the right, but both were denied by the goalkeeper Noll.
HSV deserved to be ahead after the halfway mark of the first period, but Fürth began to make the game more open after a couple of opportunities around the 30th minute. Firstly, Consbruch struck narrowly over from a strong position on the edge of the box, before their top scorer Futkeu’s shot from a similar place was too close to HSV ‘keeper Heuer Fernandes. He was left with no chance when Fürth had their third big opportunity ten minutes later. After a throw-in was flicked on, Klaus’ shot was initially blocked by Muheim, but he fired the follow-up into the roof of the net from close range. This made it 1-0 in the 41st minute, and this remained the scoreline at the break.

… and an eventful second half
HSV came out for the second period unchanged and with renewed energy – and soon found the net with an unusual free-kick goal. From around 25 yards out on the right, Dompe found a gap in the three-man wall, and the Frenchman’s low, bouncing shot found the bottom corner via the gloves of Noll (49’). The game was not level for long, however. Fürth went on the hunt for a second on the counterattack, and hit the bar through Futkeu’s strike from range. In the aftermath, Hrgota won a penalty after a challenge from Mikelbrencis. Klaus sent Heuer Fernandes the wrong way, and slotted the kick into the corner to make it 2-1 in the 57th minute. Fürth and Klaus weren’t finished yet though. The hosts really came to life after retaking the lead, and the experienced 32-year-old struck a third time with a volley to complete his first career hat trick (63’).
That goal seemed to have wrapped up the win for Fürth, but, while the home fans celebrated, Schonlau won his side a penalty after a Hrgota foul following a corner. Just as the hat-trick scorer had done, Glatzel kept his cool to reduce the deficit to 3-2 in the 67th minute, and to give his side hope. Shortly after last season’s top scorer netted his tenth goal of the current campaign, head coach Polzin made an attack-minded triple change. Sahiti, Richter and current 2. Bundesliga top scorer Selke came on as HSV switched to a back three with two strikers. The 22-goal man made an instant impact as he hit the bar with his first effort of the game. The Rothosen continued to throw everything at it, and were even more attacking after the introduction of Rössing-Lelesiit for Meffert. In the five-minute period of injury time, Dompe tested Noll again (90’+1), but the goalkeeper got the upper hand, as he did once more in a challenge with Glatzel (90’+3). Schröder initially awarded a penalty, but, after VAR intervention, correctly overturned the decision because of a foul by the striker. Deep in injury time, Selke looked to have made it 3-3, but, after reviewing VAR footage, the referee again saw a foul by the striker and chalked off the goal. HSV therefore finished the 2024/25 season with a defeat, and were automatically promoted in second place. The title went to 1. FC Köln, who beat Kaiserslautern 4-0 at the same time.
