Goalless draw on Bundesliga return away against Gladbach
The Rothosen marked their top-flight comeback with a goalless draw away to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Hamburger SV marked their Bundesliga return on Sunday (24th August) with an away match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. In front of 54,042 fans at a sold-out Borussia-Park, the Rothosen battled to a 0-0 draw on matchday 1 of the 2025/26 season. The first half was evenly contested with the clearer chances falling to the hosts, while Gladbach pressed harder after the break before HSV finished the stronger, though neither side could find a breakthrough.

Positive start...
Head coach Merlin Polzin named five new signings in his starting XI, including captain Capaldo, who led the team out in place of Poulsen (on the bench) for HSV’s first Bundesliga fixture in 2,660 days. Lining up in a 3-4-3 formation, the Rothosen made a lively start in their blue-and-black kit, with Sahiti and Königsdörffer both getting shots away inside the opening minute. The hosts gradually found their rhythm through extended spells of possession and precise build-up play, and their first big chance came on 15 minutes – Tabakovic heading just wide from a corner.
While the TSG Hoffenheim loanee Tabakovic missed the target, right winger Honorat forced Heuer Fernandes into his first major save, as HSV’s keeper beat away a shot at the near post (28’). After that chance, Gladbach had greater control of proceedings, although HSV held firm defensively and relieved pressure with efforts of their own, including a driven cross-shot from Gocholeishvili and the odd set piece. Tabakovic threatened again just before half time, heading inches wide of the right post from a Hack cross.

...and almost a late winner
Both sides resumed unchanged after the break and largely cancelled each other out in midfield during the first 15 minutes. Reitz registered the first attempt of note with a long-range strike on the hour, easily dealt with by Heuer Fernandes. Moments later, the Gladbach captain came closer with a curling effort, only for the HSV keeper to tip it superbly wide. The home side’s pressure might have merited a goal at that stage, but HSV almost struck against the run of play. Rössing-Lelesiit cut inside from the left and aimed for the far corner, with Nicolas able to push his shot behind.
The game opened up in the final stages, and Polzin looked to tip the balance with the introductions of Poulsen and Dompe. The latter almost made an instant impact, firing wide with a long-range effort. HSV had the momentum late on and even found the net, but substitute Mikelbrencis was clearly offside before finishing. Gladbach had one last chance in stoppage time when fellow substitute Diks headed narrowly wide, meaning the match ended goalless. It was a hard-fought point on the road, and one that HSV can take plenty of encouragement from as they begin life back in the Bundesliga against last season’s tenth-placed side.
