HSV fall to 4-1 defeat away to Hoffenheim
On Bundesliga matchday 14, the Rothosen came away empty-handed from their clash with a strong, fifth-placed TSG. Prömel, Kabak, Lemperle and Asllani netted for the hosts before Philippe scored a consolation goal.
On Saturday (13th December), Hamburger SV suffered a 4-1 defeat away to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Bundesliga matchday 14. The Rothosen made anything but a positive start to proceedings in front of 30,150 fans at the PreZero Arena in Sinsheim and fell behind as early as the eighth minute when Grischa Prömel headed the hosts in front. HSV had no more luck throughout the subsequent first-half proceedings, when faced with a vigorous home outfit, who doubled their advantage through Ozan Kabak on 31 minutes. After the restart, the Rothosen gained a better foothold in the contest and registered some good chances to reduce the arrears. However, the hosts in fact managed to net a quick-fire double through Lemperle (65’) and Asllani (72’) to put the result beyond doubt. Philippe did grab a goal back in the game’s closing stages but missed the opportunity to bag a brace from the penalty spot in injury time. 4-1 was how the contest ended.

Early punch to the gut …
Head coach Merlin Polzin made five changes from his team that started the Nordderby. Gocholeishvili, Muheim, Königsdörffer, Balde and Meffert all came in as Jatta, Soumahoro, Philippe, Remberg (suspended) and Dompe (Achilles) dropped out. Meffert was handed his first start of the season and led Hamburg, who were kitted-out in all-white for this clash, onto the field as captain. After a brief feeling-out period, HSV were sucker-punched early on when Wouter Burger delivered a dream cross from the left flank to pick out a free Grischa Prömel on the penalty spot, who headed into the left-hand side of the net for 1-0 on eight minutes. Daniel Heuer Fernandes was left with no chance. Shortly afterwards, Jordan Torunarigha was then required to block an effort following a corner. Down the other end, HSV then registered their first chance after a quarter of an hour, although Giorgi Gocholeishvili’s hopeful effort from distance was well off target.
Hamburg required a period of time to get to grips with Hoffenheim’s high and energetic press in order to create attacking inroads of their own, spurned on by 15,000 travelling fans. Gocholeishvili was at the centre of things again as a driven, but decisively deflected, cross from Ransford Königsdörffer just evaded him with 25 minutes played. TSG were having more luck and dealt the visitors another blow when centre-back Ozan Kabak poked past Heuer Fernandes following a stylish through ball from Prömel for 2-0. Directly after, it could have been a third for the hosts but Hamburg were fortunate to see Bazoumana Traoré shoot over the bar from inside the area. HSV did, however, then fire off two notable chances shortly before half-time. Firstly Königsdörffer and then Fabio Balde could only find TSG and Germany keeper Oliver Baumann with their strikes on goal at the end of good breaks in transition. Hence, the away side headed into the break 2-0 down.

... before a late consolation
Polzin reacted at the break, bringing on Philippe for Gocholeishvili. The Frenchman took up a birth on the left flank, with Balde switching to the right-hand side. The Rothosen emerged from the changing room with a newfound vigour, which nearly bore fruit on 49 minutes. Muheim unleashed a strike from a half-left position from range in the direction of the left side of the goal, which Baumann was required to tip over the bar. Vieira also tried his luck from distance after a lay-off from Vuskovic but sent his attempt high of the goal. HSV had become overall more active with and without the ball; however, as the hour mark approached, the hosts made their presence felt once again. Tim Lemperle headed the ball just over the crossbar following a cross from Andrej Kramaric. The TSG striker was more clinical though few minutes after that, finishing from the left-hand side of the six-yard box for 3-0.
With the result no longer in doubt, Elfadli entered the fray, with Meffert subbing out. First Prömel and then Balde at the other end let promising chances go begging before two TSG substitutes combined for the home team’s fourth. Fisnik Asllani won the ball high up the pitch and exchanged a one-two with Alexander Prass before rounding off the move from close range himself (72’). Although the Rothosen set up for damage limitation during the closing stages, they did net following a neatly strung-together counter-attack. Vieira played the ball into the path of Philippe, who kept his cool when one-on-one with Baumann to bag his fourth goal of the season and reduce the deficit to 4-1. The consolation goal gave Polzin’s side a boost, who could have added another in stoppage time from the penalty spot following a handball offence. However, it was not to be. Philippe slipped when stepping up to take the kick, striking well over the bar with a double-contact. Down the other end, Heuer Fernandes prevented Hlozek from making the final score a rather unfair 5-1.
