HSV hold league leaders Bayern München to a 2-2 draw
The Bundesliga prime-time Saturday fixture saw HSV secure a deserved 2-2 draw at home to FC Bayern München. Fabio Vieira put the Rothosen ahead from the penalty spot in a raucous Volksparkstadion before Harry Kane and Luis Díaz turned the game in the favour of the German record champions. Luka Vuskovic levelled proceedings once more with a towering header.
Hamburger SV held FC Bayern München to a 2-2 draw on Saturday evening in the first Bundesliga Topspiel to be played at the Volksparkstadion in almost eight years. 57,000 fans witnessed a courageous performance throughout from the Rothosen. Fabio Vieira handed the hosts a brief lead in the 34th minute; however, Harry Kane soon cancelled that out (42’) and Luis Díaz completed the turnaround directly after his introduction at the start of the second half (46’). Luka Vuskovic provided another swift equaliser (53’) before Hamburg defended their goal passionately for the remainder of the match to secure a first league point against the Rekordmeister since 2014.

Courageous first-half showing…
Head coach Merlin Polzin made three changes to his team that started the goalless Hamburg derby draw, bringing in Daniel Elfadli, William Mikelbrencis and Albert Sambi Lokonga for Jordan Torunarigha, Damion Downs and the injured Alexander Rössing-Lelesiit. The Rothosen made the better start at the sold-out Volksparkstadion and appeared wide awake from the off. Hamburg played with courage and created the game’s opening chance. On six minutes, Miro Muheim directed a ball right onto the head of Luka Vuskovic, who sent his effort just wide. The visitors first made their mark on proceedings after 14 minutes, testing home goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes when Aleksandar Pavlovic brought about their opening big chance, laying off for Michael Olise. He was denied by the HSV stopper, who subsequently prevented a sharp Kimmich pass from reaching its intended recipient of Lennart Karl. The away side continued to operate in and around the HSV box, albeit without calling Heuer Fernandes into further action.
The Rothosen edged ever nearer to the lead and when skipper Nicolas Capaldo was sent through on the Bayern goal at the end of counter, he was only denied at the last moment by a Manuel Neuer right palm. However, the next HSV chance came just minutes later, with Jatta stabbing the ball through to Muheim from the right, who in turn slipped Capaldo in. The Argentine was all alone in the opposing area when he laid off for the onrushing Remberg, who went to ground following contact from Joshua Kimmich. Referee Harm Osmers did not hesitate in pointing to the penalty spot. Vieira took on the responsibility from 12 yards, slotting low into the left-hand corner for 1-0 to HSV. Nevertheless, the joy of scoring first was only short-lived as Harry Kane found himself free in the box after set-up play by Kimmich. The striker left Heuer Fernandes with no chance as he smashed home on the swivel to swiftly level the scores. Hamburg looked to hit back again in stoppage time at the end of the first period. Vieira left Kane in his tracks before unleashing a shot that could not find its way past a host of Bayern defensive legs. Neither Königdörffer nor Capaldo were successful in their efforts either and the sides went into half-time all-square at 1-1.

… before an intense closing period
The away side came out of the blocks for the second half with the bit between their teeth with Olise and Serge Gnabry combining to play in substitute Luis Díaz in the 46th minute. The Columbian forward swept home with confidence for 2-1. The Rothosen shook themselves off quickly after being pegged back early on after the restart and once again threatened via a long-range Vieira try. A fizzed corner ball delivery from Muheim eventually found Vuskovic at the far side of the pack of players in the box, whose scissor kick effort did not miss by much. The Volksparkstadion crowd was reinvigorated by these chances and advocated for their team to stay on the gas. Back by this support, the Rothosen ventured forward once more, this time with Mikelbrencis leaving his opponents in his wake before standing up a tantalising cross for the young Croatian centre-back. He rose highest before powering into the far corner with his forehead for 2-2.
That equaliser provided the hosts with a second wind in their defensive work as well as up top, denying Bayern attackers Gnabry and Kane again. There might have been even more in it for Hamburg, as well: on 74 minutes, the roof of the Volksparkstadion nearly flew off at the end of a rapid counter-attack. Vuskovic slipped substitute Rayan Philippe in with a through pass, and he prodded the ball on for the onrushing Vieira. Neuer was left stranded after running out of his goal and was thankful to see Alphonso Davies spare his blushes as he cleared Vieira’s strike off the line to keep the scores level. Bayern upped the ante during the final quarter of an hour as they pushed for a winner. However, HSV continued to defend effectively, turning numerous corner balls away from Heuer Fernandes’s net and even survived a VAR check for a potential handball in the penalty area by Elfadli. A total of nine minutes of added time could do nothing to alter the score line and the game finished two-each. HSV secured a sixth straight match unbeaten on their own patch, deservedly taking a point off even the German record champions.
