HSV slump to 5-0 loss against FC Bayern
After goals from Gnabry, Pavlovic, Kane and Luis Diaz, the Rothosen trailed 4-0 at half time. The visitors put in an improved second-half performance but shipped another goal before the final whistle.
HSV left Munich empty-handed on matchday three of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. The Rothosen were beaten convincingly by the German record champions, losing 5-0 at a sold-out Allianz Arena. The hosts started brightly in front of the 75,000-strong crowd and were 2-0 up in the space of ten minutes courtesy of goals from Serge Gnabry (3’) and Alexandar Pavlovic (9’). Harry Kane then converted a penalty awarded for handball (26’), before Luis Diaz once again extended FCB’s advantage (29’). A potential historic defeat loomed for HSV, but the away side put in an improved showing in the second half and only allowed Kane to score his second goal of the evening (62’) during the second 45, meaning the game ended in a 5-0 loss.

Early goals and a big deficit at the break
Head coach Merlin Polzin made four changes to the side that started in the Hamburg derby against FC St. Pauli, with three players making their competitive debuts for HSV. New arrivals Luka Vuskovic (for Elfadli), Fabio Vieira (for Sahiti) and winter signing Aboubaka Soumahoro (for Torunarigha) were all named in the starting XI. The suspended Giorgi Gocholeishvili was also replaced by William Mikelbrencis. Alexander Rössing-Lelesiit started on the left wing once again, since Jean Luc Dompe, like Jordan Torunarigha and captain Yussuf Poulsen, was not in the squad due to a lack of training. The young HSV XI looked to play with courage against the German record champions, though they were briskly swept aside. Soumahoro was booked after only 40 seconds, and the ball was in the back of the visitors’ net at the three-minute mark. Gnabry produced an excellent finish to beat Heuer Fernandes at his near post and make it 1-0 (3’).
The home side seemed to have a spring in their step and, for the remainder of the opening stages, left no doubt that they were in the mood to score goals. After only nine minutes of play, Pavlovic doubled their advantage to 2-0. By that point, the scale of the Rothosen’s task was clear to everyone. Bayern let the ball do the talking and made their opponents put in the leg work, while HSV sat back and looked to hit the hosts on the break. Mikelbrencis had a chance to get a goal back out of the blue in the 18th minute, though his shot in the box was not accurate enough to cause Neuer any problems. At the other end of the pitch, Bayern compounded the away side’s misery. In the 26th minute, Kane converted a penalty awarded after VAR adjudged Soumahoro to have handled the ball in the box. Three minutes later, Luis Diaz bagged FCB’s fourth of the evening, as his shot from range took a deflection and wrongfooted Heuer Fernande (29’). HSV had never been behind by a four-goal margin at the half-an-hour mark of a match before. Nothing seemed to be clicking for the Rothosen, though they managed to prevent Bayern from adding to their lead before half time.

Improvement in the second half
At the start of the second half, Polzin opted for fresh legs, bringing Elfadli, Meffert and Philippe on for Soumahoro, Capaldo and Rössing-Lelesiit. With a new formation and, most importantly, more determined body language, HSV offered more resistance to the previously dominant Bayern side and had another chance through Mikelbrencis at the start of the half (47’). It was a more even contest at this point, although Bayern increasingly had the lion’s share of possession. In the 62nd minute, they made it 5-0. Kane finished off a wonderful attack that started in his own box, teeing up his effort with a couple of one-twos.
The home team would not extend their imposing lead any more for the remainder of the game. Vieira had a huge chance to net a consolation goal for HSV in the 72nd minute, but he hesitated while he was bearing down on Bayern’s goal, meaning a defender was able to get in the way of his shot. The reigning champions’ remaining opportunities were either denied by Heuer Fernandes or hit the woodwork like Olise’s last minute attempt. In the end, there would only be one goal in the second half, and the scoreline remained 5-0 until the final whistle.
