“We showed a good reaction”
Hamburger SV earned a 1-1 draw against FC Augsburg on Easter Saturday (4th April). Match reaction.
Miro Muheim: The first half didn’t quite go as we’d hoped. We then showed a good reaction in the second half. We started well and were on the verge of turning the game around. It was then an unfortunate situation when I fell on Kade’s heels, which wasn’t intentional. I had to watch the game from the dressing room after that, but credit to the team for how they threw themselves into it and continued to create chances. That’s exactly the sort of attitude we stand for as my teammates tried to make up for the red card. All in all, the point is a positive one.
Ransford Königsdörffer: We spurned a few chances in the first half, failing to both apply pressure and play with intensity. We were too slow in what we were trying to do. However, we didn’t let that get us down and did better in the second half, even despite the red card. We demonstrated good team spirit. We can say we fought hard for a point today and can be fairly satisfied on the whole.
Robert Glatzel: The overall performance was a decent one and we created chances even when down to 10, continuing to play attacking football. It would have been a huge step forward, had we secured the win, so it’s tough to take that we weren’t able to get the three points at home against a direct rival. Nevertheless, every point matters, so there are positives to be taken. I’m delighted that I was able to set up the goal – we worked it really well. I really enjoy playing here and that’s why I show up in training every day.
Albert Grönbaek: The atmosphere was unbelievable, and the fans gave us such great backing, especially at the points where we needed it most. I am proud of the way in which the team came through a tricky period today. I am obviously also really pleased to have made my debut. It was a great feeling to be back on the pitch for 20 minutes after such a long time. It was my first match since December. My situation hasn’t been easy due to the injury I picked up right after making my transfer, but I have to give the physios a huge shout-out. When you’re injured, it’s always difficult, but they made sure it was less so. I feel fit now, full of confidence, and I’m looking forward to the next few games. Generally speaking, the atmosphere here at the club is great. The team and its culture are exceptional, which I haven’t always experienced during my career. Everyone is headed in the same direction and working towards the same goal.
We’ll accept the point as part of our journey towards achieving our goal.
Merlin Polzin: We’d intended to begin this home fixture full of energy and started with a good piece of play. After that, however, we were too erratic on the ball and took too many risks. That allowed Augsburg back into the game. Despite going behind, we created more and more chances inside the opposition penalty area towards the end of the first period, which could have led to even more than they ultimately did. We then gave a superb response at start of the second half – both in terms of the coaching staff, led by Loic, and the team. That was exceptional, because it’s never easy to flip the switch when you set out with high expectations but slowly realise you’re not really in the game. It says a lot about the team that we focus less on what’s happened and more on what we can influence going forward. We found a deserved equaliser via a classy goal and then had the chance to make it 2-1 from a corner. We struggled a bit after the red card but managed to then regain control once more. It’s frustrating that we couldn’t take more from the contest, but in light of the fact that we were down to 10 men for 30 minutes against an opponent of Augsburg’s quality and intensity, we don’t want to be too greedy. We’ll accept the point as part of our journey towards achieving our goal.
Manuel Baum: Our first-half performance was a great response to three consecutive defeats: we defended well, won the ball back effectively and were good in transition. However, the common theme throughout the match was a lack of sharpness in our decision-making. HSV were more present in the game after the break. It was frustrating that the goal we conceded came after a woeful loss of possession by us in midfield. We initially responded well to the red card, maintaining our structure, and getting forward to some avail down the flanks. As is often the case when you’re a man up, though, you have to be careful not to let the opposition back into the game. That’s exactly what we did – the back pass to Finn was one example, as were the turnovers in the middle of the pitch. As a result, we completely lost our structure. I’m sure it was a great game for the fans, but that is of no importance to us coaches. I was absolutely drenched in sweat. It was chaos, and we just have to be glad we didn’t concede another.
