“Thank you, Hamburg!”
HSV’s men’s and women’s teams celebrated promotion on Monday (19th May) together with 80,000 fans in Hamburg. We spoke to those involved.
What a day. What an atmosphere. On Monday (19th May), Hamburger SV’s men’s and women’s teams celebrated their joint promotion to the Bundesliga, leading to incredible scenes in the city. The day began with a reception at city hall by first mayor Peter Tschentscher, before the teams were enthusiastically cheered on one after the other from the balcony of Hamburg’s landmark by tens of thousands of fans gathered in Rathausmarkt and the surrounding streets, balconies and rooftops. Afterwards, the teams boarded two event trucks for a parade around the Binnenalster, immersing themselves in a seemingly endless sea of blue, white and black flags as tens of thousands of fans once again gathered in the streets to celebrate their promotion heroes. HSV.de spoke to those involved to hear their reactions from an unforgettable day.

Sebastian Schonlau: “We’ve worked so hard for such a long time to experience this. Being able to celebrate with so many people here at Rathausmarkt and around the Alster makes us just so happy and proud. This club and its unbelievable fans are extremely special, today just underlined that once again. Those moments on the balcony and on the truck will stay with us for a while yet.”
Jonas Meffert: “We had been extremely looking forward to today and it was simply an incredible experience. It’s hard to put it all into words. The HSV fans are so crazy, but in a good way! The fact that so many of them came to celebrate with us on a Monday afternoon was amazing. The scenes were unbelievable. This is what all our hard work over the years was for, so we’re going to enjoy it.”
Miro Muheim: “This is incredible – it shows how big this club is, how many fans we have and that we quite simply belong in the Bundesliga. We’re pleased to have achieved promotion and that we can celebrate that now with everyone here.”
"Nobody can take these memories away from us." Robert Glatzel

Robert Glatzel: “That was absolutely crazy. Being on a truck with the whole team, the coaches, the backroom staff and our families going through the Alster surrounded by so many HSV fans was an experience I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. Nobody can take these memories away from us.”
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: “This is why we play football. I’m just thankful that we’ve been able to experience something like this. We’re all just so happy right now. We could sense over the last few days that something incredible would happen, but it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This club is so important to so many people – we could sense that today.”
Fabio Balde: “As a Hamburg native, being welcomed at the city hall by the mayor was a really special moment for me personally. I came with my school to the city hall as a kid, so now to be back here with HSV having won promotion to the Bundesliga is incredible.”
"Seeing so many people here is a feeling you can’t describe." Ludovit Reis

Ludovit Reis: “Seeing so many people here is a feeling you can’t describe. We achieved our goal, not just for ourselves but for the whole city and the HSV family. Today is a really special day.”
Merlin Polzin: “It’s indescribable – I’m at a loss for words to describe how I’m feeling. I’m very grateful to get to experience this moment, it’s one that will stay with me. The team deserved to have this moment.”
Sarah Stöckmann: “There are no words to describe what we experienced today together with the fans. Going to the city hall first and then travelling through the city on the trucks was incredible. We’re really thankful and proud to have experienced this today. We want to soak up every moment and enjoy it – this is a day we’ll never forget! Thank you, Hamburg.”
"My heartbeat wouldn’t be healthy if you measured it right now." Victoria Schulz

Victoria Schulz: “My heartbeat wouldn’t be healthy if you measured it right now. Today has been absolutely insane. Tens of thousands of people as far as the eye can see. Something like this happening in my hometown Hamburg and the teams being shown so much love is not something I could ever have dreamed of. I can’t put into words what’s going on out there.”
Svea Stoldt: “It was simply indescribable to experience this huge party together in our city. It’s a great honour for us to be able to celebrate here on the city hall balcony with the fans today. Seeing people everywhere on the balconies and rooftops is crazy. Truly unique.”
Marwin Bolz: “I think the last time I was here was for my prom at city hall. Standing here again now, after getting promoted, is something very special and the reward for many years of hard work. I’m incredibly proud of the entire team, the players, the staff and everyone who has supported us along the way.”
