“The spirit, willingness to work and chances were there”
HSV had to settle for a point despite a dominant performance after a dramatic end to the game away at SV Wehen Wiesbaden (1-1). The visitors conceded late on, equalised and then missed what would have been a winning penalty.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: We were very dominant in the first half. We knew that we would need to stay patient and wait for our chances against an opponent who likes to sit deep. We also had the better of the play in the second half with lots of possession and even better chances. Then we conceded a brutal, frustrating goal from a set piece, which only made things harder for us. You could see that we were up for it. The spirit, willingness to work and chances were there. It’s frustrating when you have the chance to win the game in the final minutes and fail to take such an opportunity. However, I’m not blaming anyone for that.
“A shame that we weren’t able to turn the game around” - Miro Muheim
Ludovit Reis: We were the better team throughout the whole game, always looking to advance forward and score goals. The energy was there. We also showed that after we conceded. We levelled the game up again. It’s a shame that Laci wasn’t able to score the penalty at the end, but that happens. He’s a top player and has he’s been playing well the last few games. We are a team and will keep going together.
Miro Muheim: We created so many chances against an opponent who sit very deep. It wasn’t easy, but we managed to do it. However, we didn’t make the most of those chances and then conceded from a set piece. I thought it was great that the team once again gave it everything in the last ten minutes and showed desire to still win the match. It was very bitter at the end that we weren’t able to completely turn the game around.
Jonas Meffert: We planned to have lots of control and lots of patience today because we haven’t done that very well against other opponents. From my point of view, the team implemented that plan well today. We lacked accuracy with our final pass today and we were just a few inches away with the penalty at the end. You tend to score from the penalty spot and the spot-kick was struck well, but it hit the bar. It’s very annoying, but we’ll move on.
“We made one or two mistakes too many today” - Tim Walter
Jonas Boldt: If you watch the whole game, you’ll see that we had good chances and had clear opportunities in front of the opposition’s goal. We need to make the most of these opportunities and take the lead. Nevertheless, we didn’t give up. It’s frustrating that we weren’t rewarded at the end since there should only have been one winner today in my opinion. I saw an opponent who defended with real heart and basically parked the bus, which is totally fair. I though our performance against such a deep-lying opponent was good, as we played with a lot of patience. At the end of the day, football is about results and when you don’t win, it always bugs you, regardless of the opposition.
Tim Walter: We played exactly how we had planned to. We’ve already become accustomed to playing against opponents who sit really deep in the last few weeks. We dealt with that well, but we unfortunately weren’t rewarded for all of our efforts at goal. However, we did have a lot of chances, that’s the most important thing. If we can be more clinical, then it might end differently. If we had been more accurate and more precise, then we would’ve got more than a draw. The boys were desperate to win and put in everything. However, we made one or two mistakes too many today.
Markus Kauczinski: We weren’t pleased at all with the first half. We didn’t start particularly well, sat deep, but you can still get forward whilst in possession. We often lost the ball too quickly and didn’t get any relief from the press. HSV applied continuous pressure, but there weren’t so many clear chances, so it wasn’t overly worried. We made good use of the chance from the corner, whilst we had a little bit of luck in the final minutes, but we also deserved that due to the second-half showing.
